Coresight Research is predicting up to 25,000 retail store closures in the US this year and 60% of those will be in malls. I imagine that we will see a lot of closures in Canadian malls too...

have we learned nothing from Uptown?
I'd prefer if it was more like Uptown. It isn't. It reminds me more of Eagle Creek Village, except with less commercial.

Makes me wonder what the proposal would look like if Home Depot (or any other commercial entity) weren't already established directly adjacent. The project could have been huge.

got an email that Landmark Cinemas on University Heights closed..i guess that means the location is getting approved for tearing down and those other businesses are gonna have to leave soon too. or it could be mean they don't see it ever reopening cause of the pandemic and it's impossible to social distance since it's small in there.
either way, the theatre was my childhood there, i'm gonna miss it. i hope they open another theatre in the future in this area since most are in downtown and the parking sucks. there is silver city too but i hate that it's in tillicum

Not confirmed, but I heard at least some are supposed to be out by next January.

does this mean they're one step closer to approving this despite the concerns the council has?

Yes and no.
Technically it is a step forward, but it is not uncommon for an application to be moved forward to a Public Hearing for councillors to confirm that the public shares the same concerns that they do. Council can still approve a motion at the Public Hearing to refer the application back to staff for additional work.
ah i see. thanks for the clarification

Maybe this is dead in the water, if the developer and Home Depot won't budge:

Five million in compensation? I don't know why Home Depot is playing hardball, surely they don't want the mall to further decline into nothing. But maybe they don't care, the mall could die and become a dirt parking lot and HD wouldn't care one way or another.
What does this mean for the tenants? They were supposed to start leaving in 2021. Are they going to renew leases year to year? Month to month? Surely some tenants have already committed to leaving. I hope they at least re-open the cinema next year.

Well Home Depot has very clear signs on their doors stating 'no dogs'. That should tell you what sort of people they are
Meanwhile Canadian Tire hands out dog treats at the checkout.

i am prepared to boycott the Home Depot if they keep up with the blackmail

Maybe the developer should have cut a deal with HD first.
Tommy: It might be a tough or even reasonable business negotiation but it is not blackmail (grab your oxford), We are not sure what business loss will occur to HD because of the development. A new mall is not going to benefit them or their business.

And playing hardball and letting the mall fail is not going to benefit the community they rely on. I suppose since they have a monopoly in that area they feel fine giving local residents the finger.

do people walk to home reno stores or consider their "local" one? Almost anything you would buy there other than like a paintbrush or some screws would be too awkward/heavy to carry when walking. I don't imagine too many people walk to Home Depot for some screws to hold together the wood they bought at Lowes or Lumber World.

This is anecdotal, but I walk to Cook Street Castle to do exactly that quite often. In the last couple months I've bought several bags of soil, flowers, wood stain, screws, a few pieces of lumber here and there, garden gloves, pipes, cleaning supplies, and many other things, all on foot. I've bussed to Home Depot for house plants and tools.
