The City of Victoria has announced a pop-up design competition for Ship Point on the Inner Harbour.

Urban designers, industrial designers, architects, landscape architects, contemporary artists and creative types are invited to submit concepts for a temporary pop-up public space at Ship Point.

The Prize: The winning team will receive a $5,000 award and up to $35,000 to design, build and install an irresistible place that pops!

Submission Deadline:  Submissions must be received by midnight on Friday, May 13, 2016.

Timelines: The winner will be announced on June 3 and installation will take place in July to be enjoyed during the summer and fall. The temporary installation will be removed in October.

Jury Details:  A panel of six qualified jurors will judge submissions based on the following criteria: social interaction and connection, aesthetics and originality, function and context, sustainability and feasibility.

If the installation isn't completed until the end of July and removed in October, what really is the point of all of this?

The proposals were judged by a jury of five on social interaction and connection, esthetics and originality, function and context, sustainability and feasibility.

Installation of Pop-Up Ships is expected to be completed by late July. The team will receive a $5,000 award and up to $35,000 for the design, build and installation.

Well, they were judged on sustainability, so who knows.  Up to $13,000 per month for some seats.

City of Victoria photo.

The city PAID for that?

How do they pop up and are they durable enough to skateboard over?

It's actually a bit nicer than I thought.  If it was permanent, it might be cool.  But it's made of wood, and it's already getting badly soiled, and washing the paint might not work as well as, say, washing a high gloss paint on smooth concrete...

And a couple of them are made of simple fabric, like the tallest/steepest oneFile_001 (3).jpeg File_000 (5).jpeg File_002 (3).jpeg File_004.jpeg File_002 (2).jpeg File_006.jpeg File_005.jpeg File_003.jpeg .

I like it too.  But I don't like the $13,000/mo. price tag.

Right beside it you have the actual Ship Point docks, and yesterday it's full of vendors and food trucks.  All of them paying money to be there, serving up loads of customers.  And making money for the Harbour Authority - that has no taxing power.

Next door, you have an art display, serving a few people, earning no money but costing the CoV $40,000 for 3 months.  And they have the taxing power to just get that money from us

Public art is not an uncommon thing in an area that lives on tourism. I have no problem with it.

At $13,000/mo. we could do much better.

We'd be better off renting a Ferris wheel.

I checked this out in person today. It's kinda cool, but I was amazed at how scuffed-up it is already.

I doesnt look bad but I agree with other posters there are too many open grassy areas. It looks sort of like the aesthetic of the vancouver conference centre waterfront area but not as built out/not as much retail/restaurants

In other words nothing much to draw people to the area half of the year.

Looks like you can easily fit 40-50 tents on the green space!
