Long overdue.  It goes towards my idea of getting people to explore more and stay one or two more nights.

Car2Go to shut down in Toronto, blaming new city rules

 

Car2Go, the prominent car-sharing company that claims 80,000 users in Toronto, will stop operations in the city on May 31, it announced Thursday in a release.

 

The company blames city hall, saying a new free-floating car-sharing pilot program passed by council in April after months of debate is overly restrictive and renders its service "inoperable." Specifically, it called the parking permit fees of about $1,500 per vehicle "unprecedented."

 

In 2017, the company was ticketed for 42,595 infractions, which amounts to more than $1 million in fines. 

 

A lot to wade through here.  Some residents did not like the idea of these ownerless cars littering the streets.  Like green bikes I guess.  

Those fines amount to like $2,500 per car in one year.  

Isn't the point of having these Car2Go cars around so that fewer people need to own cars thereby freeing up space?  Odd how it didn't work out like that...

Modo Carshare has a permanent reserved spot now on the corner outside my home.  The sidewalk was painted accordingly and the car is sitting there awaiting rental.    When did the city start allowing this in our neighborhoods?   I sure hope the City of Victoria is getting a lot of "rent" from these spots.  Perhaps these cars will replace those green bicycles that seem to be piling up on the streets.

I had to email Modo the other day.  I was following one of their cars with a *very* flat rear tire.  Who is responsible when a Modo member books their car, picks it up and finds (or doesn't see) that it's unsafe?

A member collecting a rental is supposed to do a visual inspection before using it, and report any issues via the mobile app. In general I understand that they self-insure their vehicles, ie it's included in the cost.

I know a few people who are members. They like the service and there are usually cars of different types available when they need them. Only concern was that if you are travelling a moderate distance (ie up island) it can get pretty expensive.

I've been looking at this option for some time now.  With kids in sports I'm still wavering but I can see inside 2 or 3 years I might make this leap and get rid of my car in favour of this model.  I think it will save a lot of money as I do not drive much.  Obviously I would need to plan a little further in advance.  I think any sort of travel for a distance would likely be cheaper to rent a vehicle.  Most people that I speak to who are members are couples who now have 1 vehicle and the modo is used as a secondary, which may be the most favourable model.

Members are responsible for the first $1,000 in damages (including tires), $2,500 if you have been in a previous accident. You can buy extra coverage for $50 a year which drops the deductible to $0 for the first accident.

From playing around with the trip calculator, it looks like time is more a factor than distance for the rental cost. Been thinking to book a Modo ride to go over to one of the Gulf Islands, maybe Mayne, for a day trip or up to two nights. In this scenario it would help to use one of the vehicles based in Sidney or at the Swartz Bay terminal to reduce both time and distance, but still a 2.5 day booking starts approaching $200 for the Modo rental.
