At the presentation they said research showed only 20% of rail users from Langford would be going downtown, the rest would be going elsewhere like UVic.  They said having the terminal at the Roundhouse corner would allow for easier transit connections to those other destinations, including downtown.

Research sponsored by the Bayview developers?

Didn't say, it was just stated verbally during Ken's "red marker" session.   :teacher:

It's wide but the design is a really pleasant surprise. Doesn't look anything like any of the existing Songhees buildings, which is great.

Damn, this really cheers me up after getting flamed by Mike in the Vic High thread for the past six months.

Not sure why they need to create an access road right beside the existing street, but I'm also not sure I really care at this point.

What I mean is, I'm not sure why they need to create such a long access road at all.

Edit: it's a bit weird. The image seems to show cars parked along it.

The access road is cheaper than a $1M rail crossing apparatus.

Now I'm worried this is going to turn into the Vic High thread all over again. Why does the parallel access road have to exist at all? Why couldn't parking garage access and a little drop-off loop be on the Tyee side, where it seems very natural (to me) for it to be?

The access road also goes to other future things to the west there.

Is Tyee really going to be 6 lanes there?  Fort St. is down to one lane, Cook might be down to 2, but Tyee is 6?

But that stuff will be even closer to the existing road up to Bayview, won't it? You know what I'm getting at, right? It seems like they wanted a buffer* along the front side.

Edit: Sorry, will they be connecting to that road up to Bayview? I guess not. The bottom edge of the park is in the way. I'm confused about how this is all going to come together.

Older image seems to show a crossing near the bottom right corner of the park with the driveway/access road running the length all the way to Tyee, which I guess is what they're doing:

It's an assisted care home, it's desirable to have the nice ground-level drop-off pick-up at grade, and at the centre of the building.  People in wheelchairs, walkers etc.  Ambulances.  Hearses.   Bio-hazard cleaners.  Moving trucks.  In that order.

Gotta move the traffic, man. Songhees is gridlock.

So nobody's view from up top would be affected at all by this?

Edit: I guess this other image answers my question...

That's right, no one wanted those vehicles accessing the facility via Saghalie Rd and Bayview One.

I guess we know the real reason for all the spandrel glass at Encore.  ;)

I hope the future roundhouse buildings are paying attention. Do something different. Doesn't have to be crazy different. Even a little bit different is good.

I always seem to be saying it now but a showpiece oak tree or arbutus tree (one that we're allowing and expecting to grow tall for a hundred+ years) would be great down in the bottom right corner there where those three people are standing. If you install some showpiece/featured trees on purpose in strategic places around town then methinks it would mitigate some of the pain and controversy in those instances where an existing fine old tree needs to be cut down:

Interesting how they've completely leveled the existing Bayview Place hill and Roundhouse into some kind of pristine park - the existing Bayview Place buildings are but an illusion.
