Given all the issues and challenges facing the city and region - ahem, transportation, affordability, potholes - how the hell are community BBQ's a 'strategic priority?!'

Seriously, eighty five grand (and you know it'll go way over budget this being the CoV). In Topaz Park? Must be Ben Isitt country. Wouldn't $85k just about cover hiring an extra cop....?

How and who will ensure the units are secure, and cleaned and maintained regularly? Assuming its a CoV crew is the cost of those activities factored into the budget?

Propane tanks are a major target for thieves; moreover as anyone with a home propane BBQ knows you must ensure the valve on the tank is completely turned to the OFF position once you're done. Ditto for the valve on the BBQ itself. How will the city ensure that happens?

If it doesn't what happens when the next user, who happens to be a smoker, comes along with a lit butt, or lights one up in close proximity after the gas has had some time potentially to become concentrated? Same question in the case of a vandal looking for kicks who decides to flick his bic hoping to start a little impromptu park bonfire; either way if there is a problem is the city liable in the case of an "accident"?

Yeeeeaaaah I can see really wanting to BBQ my expensive NY strip loin steaks for the entire family on that Topaz (or for that matter any public unit) after 5000 other people - 'community' folks, or otherwise - have had at it...

Do we know they are propane?

I have seen them in other communities but you have supply your own charcoal.

Right after I typed the word "charcoal" I realized the insanity of my statement with this city council in charge.

Perhaps they’ll be solar powered.

Know it all.

This was common in the parks around Brisbane when I was there.  Stainless steal plates hooked up to municipal LNG lines.  No open flame or grills.  People cleaned up after themselves it seemed.

Oops, didn't mean to imply anything about petty crime.

If you're doing a picnic in the park with the meat, side dishes, drinks (non-alcoholic of course) maybe some chairs and games or something I don't think having a bbq in place is saving you much in terms of hassle.

Permanent barbecues could soon be installed in Victoria parks
Council lists community building action item as strategic priority for 2019-2022

This is typical of the kind of numbskulled, meaningless initiatives our local government somehow equates with good governance. Downtown is becoming more of a sh*tshow every day, homelessness appears to be getting worse, hard and soft drug use is on the rise... and this is what we get. Barbeques. Banning Christmas decorations. Wasting money to remove statues. Babbling about tiny backyard houses. Millions wasted on poorly designed bike lines just to appease a handful of bike lobbyists. And on and on.

Let's see, not having to own and store a BBQ saves someone living in a small apartment a lot of hassle. Not having to transport a BBQ saves a lot of hassle for someone on the bus or bike or walking.

I can't believe that something simple and not that expensive, which will make a Victoria a little more fun, is getting so much criticism.

Oh wait, if the mayor and council were "business friendly" <cough> right wing </cough> I bet those who have been complaining would declare this the best idea ever.

Is this really how it's going to be forever? Talk about toxic politics.

Not toxic so much as suggesting that projects such as this should maybe take a back seat until the CoV can achieve any progress at all on some of the bigger issues. But I get that Quick Wins are appealing.

^ The BBQs are just being tacked on to the already approved Topaz Park Improvement Plan. Just because there are more pressing issues in other departments, doesn't mean the rest of staff will take a back seat. Parks staff will continue to do parks-related things while Public Works fills pot holes.

The City is also budgeting $100,000 on electrical upgrades to 27 of the street lights in Chinatown. There's $425,000 going towards misc. repairs and new rink boards at the arena. Not a pressing issue, so we might as well axe those from the budget, right?

^ this.

I agree with the argument when fully wasting time on stupid stuff like lawsuits vs Oil and Gas, and letters to heads of state etc. Not when it comes to stuff that is actually working on improvements to the city.

Maybe the problem isn't BBQs but spending $85,000 on them? Isn't there a cheaper way to do this? Are these going to be gas BBQs? Do people need to bring propane? Why not just those simple cheap charcoal BBQ pits like they have had at Spanish banks for years.

I’d rather bring my own barbeque for sanitary reasons, but I guess the heat does disinfect things pretty good.

I had to sell mine when I moved to a new condo a few years ago because our strata doesn't allow them. I assume there's several thousand other local residents in the same boat. I definitely miss it and hope they install something good. I made good use of the ones in Australia when I lived there, and my partner says some parks in Calgary have them too and they're great.

i don't know.  people that live in apartments also don't generally have boats but we see no need for the government to supply them.

No reason you can’t keep one of these in your apartment closet*: https://www.amazon.c...=gateway&sr=8-1

*formerly sold propane/propane accessories
