The head of Government House says it had no choice but to close the gates to its grounds after large groups of people held birthday parties and yoga sessions on the property and even brought in fire pits and barbecues.

almost sure those were not serious ongoing issues.

They have full time security there as well as a large staff. They more than any other park can easily supervisee any rare problems. Lazy and useless. Lots of public money spend on a group of people that dont feel they have to help out.

That's crazy about Government House. Why do some folks have to ruin things for the rest of us? We had been walking there frequently since we can't walk in Beacon Hill. I agree, couldn't security have spotted the barbeques coming in then sent them packing?  Close off the gazebo somehow? Hope it reopens soon.

🔹CRD Regional Parks acquires addition to Mount Work Regional Park🔹

Victoria, BC– The Capital Regional District (CRD) has acquired a 12.1 hectare parcel of undeveloped land adjacent to Mount Work Regional Park. The parcel is mainly second growth Douglas fir forest, with intermittent patches of open rock bluffs.

“This addition means we are adding just over 12 hectares of valuable parkland in our community,” said Colin Plant, CRD Board Chair. “This acquisition helps preserve this area for future generations, provides important ecological connectivity and makes a wonderful addition to Mount Work Regional Park.”

The property, located on Ross Durrance Road, connects to the western edge of the park and brings Mount Work Regional Park to 742.1 hectares. Mount Work is one of the largest regional parks and is the dominant hill on the horizon from many vantage points in Saanich, Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula. This popular recreation spot offers a variety of landscapes and activities.

The stairs to Witty’s Beach are closed due to a drainage issue that exposed a stair support.

The stairs, which reopened in 2016 after undergoing a $100,000 refurbishing, are a popular access point to Witty Beach.

The CRD closed the stairs to Witty Beach in 2014 due to unsafe conditions, but finding a solution to rebuild these stairs was a priority for the District of Metchosin.

I thought parks were supposed to be, you know, enjoyed by park users. In Victoria people are prevented from enjoying their parks by encampments. In Oak Bay people are prevented from enjoying their parks by the sound of a whiffle ball. I'm struggling to decide which is more absurd.

Now the ‘thwack’ of paddle versus ball is overwhelming residents seeking to enjoy their personal outdoor spaces.

“It’s the penetrating ‘thwack’ you can hear with all the windows in your house closed. It’s mildly annoying inside the house and you don’t want to be outside in your yard if they’re playing a lot of pickleball,” lifelong resident Doug Lee said.

The City of Victoria has determined it will financially support a preservation effort to help protect the King’s Road Community Nature Green Space.

The request came from the District of Saanich in a formal letter sent June 7 to both the City of Victoria and the District of Oak Bay.y

On July 8, the City of Victoria met with Saanich Mayor Fred Haynes where it was then determined that a donation total of $250,000 would be granted to the initiative under the condition that the District of Oak Bay donates between $60,000 to $90,000.

Oak Bay will provide $75,000 for the preservation effort to protect the King’s Road Community Nature Green Space.

A report by Oak Bay staff said that the district’s grant in aid budget is currently underspent by $25,000 and the event budget is forecast to be underspent by $50,000 because the Oak Bay Tea Party was cancelled. It was recommended that their contribution come from their grant for aid and events.
