They will literally be eating The Village's breakfast and lunch by opening there - I mean, at least patrons will.

The Village: Royal Oak, which is also primarily a breakfast/brunch restaurant,  is located just across West Saanich Road, on the other side of Viewmont Avenue.

I think so.  Look, most of the time, a new restaurant opening up near an established one actually helps in the long run, making the neighbourhood more of a destination.  But there are other factors at play.  First, The Village's price point is much more aggressive than Floyd's, but arguably the food and presentation is higher quality.  I would also posit that while The Village has established a strong brand, Floyd's is stronger - but for argument's sake, let's call it a wash.  The X factor IMHO is restaurant size and parking.  The old Olive Grove is massive compared to The Village and has much more parking nearby, on-site (in behind) and along Viewmont Avenue.  People who would be used to queuing up to The Village and waiting are more likely to give it a miss, heading across the road.  Until there's a point where they just start going directly to Floyd's.  Of course, I hope that they both flourish.

I'd argue they cater to different crowds. Village is after the healthier, wealthier middle aged and middle class while Floyd's is aiming for those younger folks who cure a hangover with fried rice and a shot of jack in their coffee. There might be some overlap (I dine at both, depending on the week) but not a direct competition.

i went past there recently & thought that paint job was a terrible idea, but now that I know it will be a floyd's it doesn't look so bad  

Does Floyd's have special dispensation from any municipal regulations regarding exterior paint colours or do no such rules exist anywhere in the CRD? What I wonder is if a new building were being proposed to be such a garish tone, could a local government turn down the proposal and request a colour change?

 They have a dish which is just half a dozen strips of bacon, a can of Lucky, and a shot of Jack. They serve boozy milkshakes. They'll Irish up your OJ if you ask. Yeah, they serve booze.

I don't disagree, but I think that there's more overlap than you think: even more so for lunch.  I think that they both cater to hipsters, I just think it depends from what side of the bed they got out.

As someone who lives a 2 min drive away, I'm very excited. Villages is AMAZING and I will continue to go there, but its a different style and for sure is directed at local, gluten-free, and healthy crowd. 

 

It just saves everyone in the area a trip DT for something different.

Different clientele's? I'll say. That post by VW with the image of "breakfast" is all the reminder I need about why I went to the original Floyd's location once and never went back. Just reading it now makes my gout flare up, heh.

 

That said I'm always up to learn new things and thanks to Bob & Jasmineshinga et al., I have discovered Village, which I've never heard of nor patronized, but it sounds very interesting so we'll give that one a go for sure. Now back over to you "Floyd's" fans....

Med Grill is great, but you typically need to call for a reservation a couple days in advance at least now. Even on regular weekdays.

I forget the name of the guy who ran it, I think he was Swiss and he really knew his stuff. I hate to see the building now that ghastly colour. Makes me think too much of Pepto Bismol.

Drove by the building the other day and it looks like they are sparing all expense on the exterior at least.  This may be a tough market for them, there are a number of upscale breakfast and lunch offerings in the area and I am not sure that "suburban greasy spoon" is a winning concept.

To be fair, I am sure the interior renovations will be even cheaper looking. Ghetto-chic is kind of the Floyd's aesthetic.
