Journalism faces an 'existential crisis' in Trump era

By Christiane Amanpour, Chief International Correspondent, CNN

Updated 11:58 AM ET, Wed November 23, 2016

New York (CNN)  I never in a million years thought I would be up here on stage appealing for the freedom and safety of American journalists at home.

Ladies and gentlemen, I added the bits from candidate Trump as a reminder of the peril we face.

I actually hoped that once President-elect, all that that would change, and I still do.

But I was chilled when the first tweet after the election was about "professional protesters incited by the media".

From what I can gather 'televised' Trump will be by YouTube only until his Trump TV is ready.

Interesting segment on radiolab about the future of news. The team explores new tools that can be used to edit dialog and live video much the same way as you would photoshop a picture. Check out the fake Obama press conference that they created and then check out the podcast itself.

Alternative Media is the Key.

That's the only place you have any realistic chance of getting raw "Say it how it is" Journalism.

And even then you have to research that "Alternative Media" Source to see if they are legit or if they are are a branch of a Main Stream Media corporation.

I take my hat off to the legit alternative media people that put everything on the line (even their own lives) to get the TRUTH out to the public or anyone that is listening to them.

The National Post is reporting that its request for a comment related to an alleged welding issue in the Henry DeWolf naval vessel built on the east coast was mishandled, and their enquiry ended up resulting in a legal threat from the shipbuilder, Irving.

https://nationalpost...-a-private-firm

After sending the query to both government departments on March 6, the journalist received several prompt replies — within two hours, in fact. But not from federal officials. Instead, the replies came from Irving Shipbuilding, which built the DeWolf. The first was an offer of information, the second was a threat to sue Postmedia if “anything false about (Irving’s) reputation is published.” Irving knew the journalist’s identity and the topic of his queries.

Psst Mike.....since you're comment appears in the "Journalism" thread gotta make sure you do your research and get the details right: this class is actually named after Harry DeWolf, one of Canada's most famous and well known naval officers of the 20th century. Not sure who Henry DeWolf is.. :)

Wouldn't be at all surprised if there were in fact welding issues with the lead ship as has been rumored from several well placed and informed sources for months, so I hope the NP sticks with the story....

The ship class is indeed Harry DeWolf, named after Henry George “Harry” DeWolf. The navy used the nickname.

No points for anyone on this round.

Considering the gravity of the situation, they'll not only be pursuing this story but also working to uncover who turned their enquiry over to the contractor.

They should expand it to a expose of the entire rotten core of the CAF procurement process, including and especially bidding on RCN contracts, as the whole fish stinks from the head down.

I would expand it while they're at it to dig very deep into the case of Admiral Norman, which looks more and more like a government/Privy Council/DND railroad job. In fact our director, ex-RCN, ex-CSOR, who spent as much or more time navigating the political minefields of Ottawa and "other unspecified places in the world" as he did at sea, is absolutely convinced Norman will be exonerated when he goes to trial later this summer.

Exonerated, or prevented from testifying?

There’s quite an uproar coming out of SFO where a journalist was taken down by police at gunpoint when he failed to disclose his source of information relating to a high profile death.

The below quote is obviously quite colourful, but what the actual heck is going on in California?

Oh, the irony is deep. Trump hasn’t jailed any journalists or ordered raids, but in blue cesspool of San Francisco, not revealing your sources as a member of the media could bring police and sledgehammers to your residence. On the issue of press freedom, or what the liberal media thinks is an issue, it seems we have not just a case of friendly fire, but a Democratic state actually taking the mantle of using police powers to compel reporters to spill their sources. Welcome to progressive America.

^^ Your wording could use some work, Mike. Until I read the article, I was under the impression that the SFO cops had actually killed the journalist...

If they had killed the journalist, I would have said he'd have been shot and killed, not taken down at gunpoint.

Taken down at gunpoint is a common phrase referring to police subduing someone with their guns drawn, and the CBC agrees.

I read "taken down" as "apprehended".  Now "taken out" would have been something else.

Surely you’ve m heard of a takedown before? It’s the same thing as taken down. Dust got the right meaning, as in a takedown/taken down is an apprehension/arrest.
