Naturally, segments of the American media did not exactly embrace everything Gervais had to say that night. Indeed, Gervais was immediately blasted for cruelly repeating “right-wing talking points” to score cheap laughs.
“Here’s my Ricky Gervais problem: The idea that celebrities are not only pampered babies but hypocrites who cause the problems they make speeches deploring and should therefore shut up and act/sing/be grateful is a right-wing talking point, and an especially stupid one,” tweeted Mark Harris of Vanity Fair.
PIERS MORGAN: Ricky Gervais delivered a glorious kick in the globes to Hollywood's woke virtue-signalling hypocrites - and exposed them as a bunch of shameless two-faced charlatans
https://www.dailymai...hypocrites.html
Finally, Gervais said something I agree with I whole-heartedly supported his decision to omit tributes to the deaths of white people until more actors of color are included
I imagine you were all expecting me to write a scathing review of Ricky Gervais’s recent diatribe at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. Well you would be wrong. Because you see, that is precisely what Ricky is counting on. When he stands there, obnoxiously pimping his own ego in front of the world’s most caring and compassionate people, he is doing it for the attention he so obviously craves.
Yes, it was a truly disgusting display (not to mention a staggeringly apt symbol of toxic white male privilege) to see this abhorrently wealthy japesmith spewing his vile alt-right propaganda disguised as ‘jokes’ directly into the faces of the humble and benevolent Hollywood glitterati. Imagine getting up on a stage to say things purely for attention at the expense of a roomful of such modest humanitarians? I am guessing he was paid a great sum of money as well in order to degrade the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence, so in essence, he was literally PAID to attack women much more vulnerable and fragile than he. If Meryl Streep had been offered the job of hosting, no doubt she would have been paid a lot less. You cannot make up hypocrisy like this and my heart bleeds for the poor actresses who have to live on a mere $15 million per movie while the likes of Kevin Bacon probably earn three times as much just for appearing in a Logitech commercial.

When Ricky Gervais first hosted the Globes in 2010, his cutting comments and sarcastic style provided a master class in ridiculing celebrities and set a blueprint for the ceremony's future hosts.
This year, he sensibly pre-empted the inevitable social media outrage over his politically incorrect gags by telling the audience: "Remember, they're just jokes. We're all going to die soon, and there's no sequel."

yes this is good. if you only read one gervais article today this is the one.
Ricky Gervais, Man of the People
In a room filled with self-absorbed narcissists, one brave, slightly less self-absorbed narcissist had the balls to speak truth to power—and his name is Ricky Gervais.
If courage had a face, it would be a slightly overweight, pasty British multi-millionaire drinking a pint. Taking the stage to host his fifth and final (allegedly) Golden Globe Awards, Ricky spoke for us, the oppressed, six-figure earning, working middle-class, little guy.

But the emperor has no clothes. And with a few pointed jokes, Gervais pierced their collective delusion, exposing the hypocrisy of Hollywood for what it truly is. As he so casually reminded them, these are the people who partied with Jeffrey Epstein and made movies with Harvey Weinstein. They take China’s money and look the other way at its human rights abuses, censorship, sweatshops, IP theft, and their most heinous crime, banning South Park.

Ricky Gervais’s performance at last night’s Golden Globes was enough to make Gene Kelly turn in his grave. Once upon a time, Hollywood was synonymous with elegance and class but Gervais’ tirade of nasty and smutty jokes proved that tabloid culture has leaked its way into even the highest tier of entertainment. Call me a prude but a joke about Judi Dench “licking her ass” hardly screams high society.
If there’s a place for cheap humour, it’s at Friday night work drinks after one too many, an episode of South Park or in a best man’s risqué speech. It’s certainly not on the stage that birthed the #MeToo movement, one that should respect its power for mass influence.
The awards were certainly not free from activism – powerful speeches were given by actors including Jennifer Aniston on climate change, Joaquin Phoenix on veganism, Michelle Williams on abortion rights and Patricia Arquette on the conflict between Iran/US. But any meaningful message is dampened when the man at the helm is making schoolboy jokes about paedophiles.

Gervais was speaking to “the people,” not Hollywood. They can’t handle it.

the brilliance of what gervais did is that he just called it like most normal people see it all. he's also massively wealthy. he's got $40m from just two netflix specials. he's got millions more from being an executive producer and creator of the us office series. he also has the largest hit in the uk right now his latest series. so he's one of "them". but not a hypocritical one.
he's also linking all the major articles - critical of him - right on his twitter feed. smart.

CNN hosts must also finish every broadcast by saying, "Good night, and I am a big, fat dummy, while Trump is the best president we've ever had."
Brian Stelter requested an exemption and was allowed to wear a clown nose instead, as usual.

“Overheard convo between two Republican Senators who only watch Fox News. ‘is this stuff real? I haven’t heard any of this before. I thought it was all about a server. If half the stuff Schiff is saying is true, we’re up ****’s creek. Hope the White House has exculpatory evidence.[‘]” - Joe Lockhart. He later said it was what he thought they would be saying between themselves.
The big joke this morning is if Brian Stelter will feature Lockhart on his Reliable Sources show, lol.

Bernie Sanders draws criticism for touting Joe Rogan endorsement
Rogan, a libertarian-leaning broadcaster with a public persona in the mold of Howard Stern, is a divisive figure who has said the N-word on his show and in 2013 questioned -- using offensive language -- whether a transgender MMA fighter should be able to compete against other women.
