Those Disneyland photos are great -- the "town" actually looks authentic compared to that trite, totally hideous atrocity known as "Tuscany Village" in Saanich. God, it's ugly!

The Bay Centre remains a painful reminder of the perils of the historical pastiche form of architecture.

As the Disneyland pictures clearly show, even when it's done to absolute perfection, there's a certain hollowness--a sterile artificiality. I simply believe there's no good way to pull it off.

I think the only thing that would make them interesting is if you gave different partners within an architectural firm a portion of the development to design. The Merrick designs for Hudson and Radius show a firm can work together (yet separately) to do this. Heck, why not give them to rival firms? Think how interesting Tuscany Village would have been had it been designed by Franc D'Ambrosio along with say, [url=http://www.numberten.com/projects/mixed_use/:e1dde]Number Ten AG[/url:e1dde]?

This is one of the most atrocious, poorly thought-out designs to come across the CRD in several years. It makes me happy that I do NOT live in Saanich. And let's not forget that Tuscany II: The Sequel (aka Town & Country) is just around the corner.

Oh, man. They did "arched" windows, but then didn't arch the windows, they added an exterior trim that was arched, over a rectangular window.

That probably saved them $500 a window.

That drawing actually looks pretty good. It seems like they've strayed from the original concept by quite a bit. Although I suppose we should let them finish the place before we criticize it too too harshly.

^ but note the difference in the rendering's roofline(s), compared to what they built (slightly pitched roof, v. flat roof). That seems to make a huge difference... (not positively)...

^ So the pitched roofs were just meant for those little storefronts, but weren't part of the plan for whatever elevation that is in the photograph of the development (as it looks today) right below the rendering?

This photograph, I mean:

This piece of it looks ...really tacky...

^ No, it has a pitched roof, you just can't see it in the picture at that angle.

The architect has done some good work in the past.

Oh, you're right! -- D'oh, stupid me, I must have been blinded by all that pink! :) (That colour is pretty hard to take -- is it just the photograph, or are the buildings really that "tropical"...?)

Yes, I see what you mean (checked some of their projects on their webpages). So what happened here? Will it still all come together, or is it WYSIWYG right now, and something went sideways?

OMG it's all just so awful, so fake, so Disneyland...I don't even know where to begin to start with what is wrong with this project....if nothing else, who ever looked at the McKenzie/Shelbourne intersection and said "This reminds me so much of the Tuscan region in Italy, I MUST do what I can to bring even a little of that atmosphere here...even if it is totally erzatz."

Those must be the shallowest 'juliet' balconies--they're just gates across a sliding door. I guess that's what's ringing false for me--the flatness of the whole facade.

Thanks for the pics.
