As VHF said, taking 35 hours off work is a lot to ask. Add in an annual vehicle inspection and it isn't worth the hassle for a lot of people.

I'm also not sure the validity of annual (costly) inspections.  If it's a late-model car, what's to check?  Tire tread is about all you can cheat.  I guess you could run with faulty brakes for a bit, but that seems reckless to your own car.  Remember, on the whole these cars belong to people as their main ride, they are not cabs or rental cars.  Not many people would want to drive a car in lousy shape.  Fiscally it's not a good idea.

EDIT:  Uber already makes you get your car inspected annually in Montreal, at Canadian Tire or M. Muffler.  .  Maybe the government wants to add another layer to that.   Also car has to be 2008+ and max 350,000km.

Vehicle requirements

To drive with Uber in Montreal, your vehicle must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • 4-door vehicle
  • A solid roof
  • 2008 models or more recent
  • Maximum of 350,000 km
Vehicle Inspection

To drive with Uber in Montreal, your vehicle must pass an inspection. Get the details here.

I'd like to know more about the training requirement. In a lot of places the training for taxis isn't related to safe driving. It is related to memorizing locations, studying the local map, and learning the best routes for how to get from one place to another. In other words, exactly the kind of training that should be mandatory for a 20th century taxi driver, but is largely irrelevant today.

For me, this continues to be mostly about an entrenched industry that has failed to innovate using political pressure to exclude competition. As far as I'm concerned the taxi drivers can either figure out how to out-compete Uber/Lyft, or they can go sit in the corner with the typewriter repairmen and the blacksmiths.

So, this summer Raccoon Go and Udi Kuaiche have said that between them they already have 700 drivers in Vancouver.  Neither requires drivers to have any background check.

More likely it is to have foundational regulatory requirements. Uber, similar to other companies wants to minimize standard requirements across all jurisdictions and has chosen, similar to others before to pull out if it's demands are not met.

Regulatory negotiation through the media. Might work in BC, but I would think Uber has misread Quebec's higher bar for standard regulation and it's profound dislike for being told what to do by others.

Loves regulation but has by far the most corruption of any province

Vancouver is the largest city in North America without operations from ride hailing companies like Uber and Lyft — and it could be that way for some time to come.

Transportation Minister Claire Trevena poured cold water on the possibility of legislation coming from the government anytime soon, in response to a question put to her during the Union of B.C. Municipalities conference on Wednesday.

"At the moment, we're working in general on getting to a stage where we can assess what to do next," she said.

"It isn't easy."

Trevena raised multiple challenges the government faces in implementing laws allowing ride hailing, including ensuring passenger safety, making sure drivers had proper insurance and determining the role the Passenger Transportation Board would play.

Actually it is easy, just let the market take it (they are all ready), then tune as needed.

Seems the entire rest of the developed world has dealt with it, hard to know why BC finds it so hard.

 including ensuring passenger safety

In the legacy system we have now many passengers just in Victoria have been raped and killed.  Hard to see how that system is working better than UBER.

Seen plenty of taxis with wonky or broken lights and other visibly defective equipment.

Patience, young grasshopper.  The presser has not yet started.

They have announced an expert to "develop a solution". Whatever the hell that means.

Victoria - The Government of British Columbia has hired industry expert Dan Hara to consult with and help prepare the taxi industry for a made-in-B.C. solution to ride-sharing that will allow people to get around more easily, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Clare Trevena announced today.

Hara is apparently some sort of taxi industry guru. What a joke.

Great, sounds like another government pre-meeting meeting.  A prime example of utterly wasteful spending.  Do we really need to hire a taxi industry expert?

This is exactly what the G&M predicted would happen this morning. The East Indian community is too powerful a lobby group on the lower mainland.

There seems to be nothing this government likes more than a review.

Just put in a darned phase-in, like allow 50 Uber cars per year over 15 years.  Or let them in if they pay a $5,000/yr license.  Or some other dumb thing that makes it look like they are pleasing us all, while we continue to be the only place in North American without this service - a service the public wants.

Glad the long phone call I had to take during this release was time better spent.

Are they going to study the previous two studies the previous government studied?

As soon as the E&N commuter rail study with a deadline of mid-summer, 2017 is completed I'm sure they'll make great time with this one.
