The first 10 minutes was promising, but the Caps could not capitalize on any of their momentum. The Sounders were sticking to their men and not letting Vancouver advance.  think most of the Caps' possession was in their own half, they were playing the ball back so much!

I dunno, it seemed like the whole game they were playing towards a draw... which works great until you're down one and the other team gets momentum. The lack of attack really screwed the team over. At least had they gone out fighting it wouldn't be so painful a loss.

The first major professional league championship won by a Canadian team since the 1993 World Series win by the Blue Jays, correct?

Unless you count an NLL championship.

Didn't a Canadian team win the Grey Cup this year?  ;)

But seriously, it's been almost 25 years since a major league trophy came to Canada? Thanks for that tidbit of info!

Why do soccer teams so often have FC at the end of their names? I know what it means, but you don’t see baseball teams with BT at the end etc.

What’s the history?

Matt.

Probably historical. Many football clubs were formed late 19th century onwards, they developed in some cases from other sports clubs. Ie cricket teams or they wanted to distinguish themselves with the FC Title.

PS: Just a guess.

PPS: Its football not soccer

North American leagues are brutal for this. In the MLS alone, there are teams that use FC, SC and CF.

Going back to the original question though, I don't think team names were ever a thing in early European sport. So it's this way in most sports. It's just the city or sport club name, plus the acronym for sports club, or hockey club, or football club, or whatever the club may be. It gets really confusing with the acronyms, because really in most leagues globally, they use all sorts in multiple languages meaning multiple things. Take a look at the Swedish Hockey League...there's like 7 different acronyms across the 14 teams.

For the same reason that "Association", "Company" and "Society" are used by other entities, it describes the nature of the organization.
