Italy is out, for the first time in 60 years!

I was in Italy when they won a quarter final in the World Cup in 94.  They went crazy.  Big Soccer/football fans (fanatical).

A complete shocker.

There's some other big names that will be absent.

The Netherlands continued their run of less than stellar play and missed out on their second straight major tournament after reaching the World Cup finals in 2010.

USA failed to qualify, despite one of the easiest qualification paths, largely because of some perplexing personnel decisions.

Chile failed to qualify, despite being ranked #9 in the world currently, mostly because South American qualifying is absolutely brutal.

I was really pulling for Syria to qualify.  They came very close, despite not being able to play any qualifiers at home.  Would've been a great underdog story.

  • New Zealand vs Peru (November 16)
  • Denmark vs Republic of Ireland (November 14)
  • Honduras vs Australia (November 15)

Those are the last ones needed.

Those are the last ones needed.

All three with nil-nil opening rounds, which gives Denmark, Honduras, and New Zealand the advantage as the away teams in the second legs.

Peru at #10 vs NZL at #122 is an interesting possible upset. Could take two of the four best CONMEBOL teams out of the World Cup (including Chile).

advertisers must not be happy with Italy being out, even USA.

Italy and the Italian diaspora is upwards of 100 million fans.  These are hardcore fans that save up years to go the Worldcup.

FIFA always wants a big name final, the big names are Brazil, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Argentina.

We will miss Italy's dynamic and exciting brand of international footie. Squeeze out a goal then turn turtle. Meh!

Ivory Coast didn't make it and neither will the Irish (as goal number 4 goes in)

The Socceroos are in. Only one more spot to be decided now.

They beat Honduras, the most hated team for Canada fans for the past decade. That makes them my new favourite. :)

Qualifying is now done, with the draw set to happen on December 1 based on the October 2017 FIFA World Rankings.

So looking at the schedule, looks like most games are 6am and 7am, and a daily 10am game.  Final is a 7am start.  All times Pacific.

Not helpful to pubs that might want to show games but I guess it could be worse.

Wasn't it Alberta where a one-day amendment to the liquor laws allowed bars to open and serve at like 6am for the gold medal hockey game in Sochi?

We watched the Gold medal game at the bar. 3am. No booze. But we had a hotel room above for between periods!

Qatar in 2022 won't be any better and it will be winter time here, who's going to get up at those times to watch

England vs N.Korea battle it out.

The draw. No real group of death here. Group F is the closest to it.
