Practicality over ideology please. reality vs fantasy. Seriously, this goes back to my prior comment about people being 'qualified' that some folks got their panties in a twist.

Nope, we don't care as long as you don't get in the way of our work to undo decades of social engineering for cars with new social engineering for people.

We need new experience. Not old and qualified by new qualities. Again, there is a huge amount of experience in the staff that do all the doing. Council's job is to represent us and keep them in line. Let's get all new blood.... It's not impracticable at all nor is it anarchy. Just mix it up. Some left some middle some right. No need to vote in the crazies here.

If #nomercy catches on with the VV crowd and not the rest of the populace then you'll have a council left of what you have now.

Council has all but forgotten about the people who don't show up to speak at council meetings (most of Vicoria's residents)

Wrong. Every poltical pundit during trumps campaign said the kind of growth he promised was total fantasy and would never happen. Now that hes done it they say it was all obama. Yeah right. Its called deregulation, lowet taxes, getting coal back etc etc

Surely it takes more than a year to turn around the economy of a country with 300,000,000 people.

Well we are a year in and Macro economic policy change doesn't take that long get a result (like slashing regulation and corporate taxes). Also psychology and confidence has a lot to do with it. Consumer confidence is way up with Trump.
My point is trump has hit GDP growth that most said wasn't possible anymore. To now say it was obamas doing all along it just took 8-9 years is disingenuous. Give the man his due

The thing with #nomercy is it bridges political leanings. This is the key. Right and left can come together. If you start to pick and choose it all falls apart and we get the same crew with one new face and Ben as the mayor. It needs to be no incumbents on the ballot even if it means a goofball or two....

I don't think a clean slate has to mean a shift to the right. It could mean "lefty" policies but executed better. Much better.

E.g. I think that protected bike lanes are a solid idea, but I think the way they have been rolled out here was very badly done.

I have compassion for people who are homeless or addicted to drugs, and I would like to see local government help those people in a way that doesn't just seem to perpetuate the cycle of suffering.

And so on...

I've said before that it might be wise to keep Coleman and Alto, and dump the rest.

Get the left wing off council, as municipal politics never benefit from left wingers .... this from an old lefty (lefty's work better at the provincial and federal level).

It would be refreshing for the COV to get some major new blood, with just enough common sense and continuity to keep the ball rolling (Alto is the most level headed, well spoken member of council - worth re-electing IMO - and Coleman isn't far behind).

Of course the bike lanes would remain, they're already there - and the money owed on them is already owed ... but as for any further development of bike lanes - maybe in another 5 or 6 years. Let's see if these ones work as advertised.

But the drugs, homelessness, and insanely high property and personal crime rate has to go ... and it has to go in a way that none of the current bunch at the COV want to see it go. It has to be eradicated, not coddled to such that it's all still there, but there with a warm bed to sleep in, and 3 squares a day.

And certainly COV staff are huge drivers of various and sundry projects around the city, but staff are always beholden to the mayor and councils wishes ... which is exactly what we elect them to do - guide COV staff on how we want to see the city run.

And please ... can we get a mayor that knows how to sit down with a Chief of Police and tell him/her what exactly they require to be improved, and then mandate benchmarks and timelines for that improvement to bear fruit.

Disaster?

Have you not seen how America's economy is doing, what has happened to their unemployment rate, the number of companies that have issued bonuses to their workers, the number of companies expanding within the country in lieu of foreign countries, and the tax cuts that even the party's opponents admit will be a good thing for the average American?

The only disaster south of the border is the media's insane portrayal of one of the most bullish eras in recent American history.

Not to disappoint you with facts but 2017 saw the slowest rate of job creation in years in the US.  http://www.msnbc.com...umps-first-year

And wrong again.   GDP growth is 3.2%.   Trump said he would achieve 4% or 5% or 6%, that is what people were referring to when they said not likely to be possible.      3.2% is healthy, but not particularly out of the ordinary.  https://www.bea.gov/...7_3rd_chart.png

#nomercy campaign is about a clean slate no matter which side of centre you lean. Just don’t vote for any incumbents. We need to hold our politicians accountable and too many have been in there for too long and there seems to be no accountability. We can’t overspend on major projects that derail without consequences. We can’t ignore major issues with our downtown anymore.

The trouble is, who's better?   We thought we were getting something better when we voted Atwell in.   Noooope.

You bring up a very good point, dasmo.

What if the agenda we're seeing has staff written all over it? What if that's actually the case?

Helps did say it was staff who pitched the tent city idea, not her. Helps also said staff were a driving force behind the bike lanes.

You mean the deep state is running Victoria too?  ****.

It's nonsense at this point to claim Trump's policies have been some massive economic success. It would also be nonsense to claim they have been a disaster.

Three quarters reported GDP under Trump. Growth was 1.2%, 3.1% and 3.2%. This is decent but not exceptional.  Obama presided over 32 quarters.  7 were above the 3.2% growth rate that is now claimed to be exceptional (several were also much worse).

There is no real evidence (yet) that there has been any big change in growth under Trump. But we can at least say he hasn't screwed things up yet either - at least not on the economic front.
