Wow, I hadn't been to the Uptown Best Buy in awhile and it's like a completely different store.  The interior is really nice.  There are lots of vendor specific product displays that are very well designed and seem integrated into the design theme of the overall store.  The black ceiling and LED lights look great vs. the HID lamps they were using before.  Oh, and the carpeted floors are raised so all the kiosk wiring is hidden under the floors.  Definitely worth checking out!

Oh yeah, and that LG OLED TV (the Signature TV W) on display is as thin as it looks on the back too - and has a five figure price tag!

But first, here is what it looked like early last year:

And now for the reno, note the Guitar Center like musical instruments room has been reduced to more of a memorial...

Nice store, but aside from apple products I can’t see why anyone would buy anything there.

Not my favourite place to shop due to the somewhat abundant, and rather odd staff ... but the new reno makes it the nicest electronics store in town to shop in ... and their in-store (in-stock) inventory is far in excess of anybody else in the region if you're a "try before you buy" kind of shopper.

I've been shopping with this outfit through a few different owners, dating back to when they started out as Future Shop in that little strip mall at Douglas and Burnside. Their selection has always been what's drawn me back in the front door.

I think bricks'n'mortar stores have to up their game like this recent reno though, in order to avoid going the way of Sears.

It's pretty tempting just to go Amazon Prime, and do all your electronics shopping while you're drinking your morning coffee

But Best Buy need to stick with what they know well. That musical instrument "room" in the old store was ridiculous. Nobody in Victoria is going to buy a musical instrument anywhere but Long & McQuade. It is a prime example of what happens when you don't pay attention to your local market.

It looks like Best Buy have essentially forsaken the musical instrument section (a "memorial" as Gary so aptly put it) - which would show they're on top of things in terms of keeping their store directly relevant to the local market.

Not everyone is an Apple fan... certainly if you're in the market for a laptop and want to touch and feel it before you buy it, head here.

Yeah, it's great if you need something NOW and they have it in stock, which can be easily checked on-line.

No no, I just meant that Apple fixes their prices so buying online isn’t any cheaper than in a store.

Oh, I see. I do think Best Buy tries to be competitive on price too, as much as they can. That said, hopefully no one is being dumb and buying $60 Monster gold plated 3 foot hdmi cables there anymore!

My last three major electronics purchases were at Best Buy...their prices were competitive with online retailers at the time.

Amazon, every time. Newegg came close but lacked stock and shipping times were longer.

I do make the effort to check Best Buy as well, as I’m not partial to either, I just want the lowest price and fastest shipping.

The way those branded displays work is those vendors pay best buy for the space kind of like grocery stores selling prime shelf space so its a smart way to do it

I generally find Best Buy competitive and generally always check prices online.  I did however save around 4k buying my home theater equipment in the US

Yep I’m the same. Bought a SSD a couple weeks ago, best price was Newegg. Done. It’s the same product everywhere so whichever is the lowest overall cost and takes less than a week shipping typically wins.
