To complicate this thread further

In addition to the iPhone being based on Samsung processors and memory modules, it also uses the Samsung screen. One could argue that there is no such thing as an iPhone....only Samsung. :P

.......It has to appeal to a large base of people so it waters their products down.

Can you clarify that comment?

What specific product, and in what specific area has Apple "watered down" (whatever you believe they've watered down) something in order to make it more appealing to a larger base of end users?

Be specific please.

Moving forward it’s hard to say what the company will be known for without its visionary at the helm, but it’s clear that once you take that bite from the forbidden fruit (the Apple logo) it’s tough to look elsewhere.

Nah, that goes both ways. My iPhone is work provided. Barring that, I'd have a Pixel 3. I use both Macs and PCs at work, and vastly prefer the PCs for most work; either running Linux or Windows.

Each to their own. I own no Apple products, though I have broad, everyday exposure to them. Heck, I've even done a screen repair myself, tons of Mac rebuilds, hardware upgrades etc... Over priced for what you get, especially Macbooks.

Once I switched over to a MacBook Pro I finally realized what all the fuss was about.

I’m not a fan of the way Apple restricts you with their own cables and Bluetooth-like file sharing and how certain aspects of IPhones are limited. But oh well.

Well they are finally going to get rid of the lightning plug and go over to USB, that will save a lot of cord juggling.

Life's a journey......so roll down the window and enjoy the breeze.

Ever heard of software?

Ever heard of UNIX?

Both have their basis from UNIX.  Android is more open source / Linux, but iOS is still unix based.

The iPhone revolutionized the world.

The iPod revolutionized the mp3 experience.

Apple Music revolutionized the music industry.

The iMac revolutionized mass-consumer PC’s.

And this was all in the last ten years. Since the 80’s Mac Pro’s are the de-facto machines for movie editing. Virtually every Hollywood film since then was edited on Mac’s. Virtually every record was produced on a Mac. Virtually every visual design created digitally was made on a Mac. So from a cultural perspective those machines and most importantly their software made possible so much that several generations associate with global culture and visual arts.

Moving forward it’s hard to say what the company will be known for without its visionary at the helm, but it’s clear that once you take that bite from the forbidden fruit (the Apple logo) it’s tough to look elsewhere.

i will agree with the ipod statement, but even that has gone the way of the dodo bird.  The other 3 I completely disagree with

As for having Apple at work, in my professional career every computer that was ever supplied with NOT apple.  The Hollywood film/music industry makes up what percentage of computers sold?  0.00000000001%?.  Meanwhile in almost over office tower in the world, Mac's are rare

I've tried Mac's, absolutely hated it (my parents bought one because....of the look lol).  It felt like driving a right hand drive car after of course driving left hand drive my entire life.

I admit when I first wanted to get a smartphone I went into to buy an iPhone, but after the salesman started comparing features, etc I left with the better phone, a Samsung Galaxy.  Never looked back and ever 2 years buy the latest Samsung, but of course want to compare it to the latest iPhone and every time Samsung comes out on top

And then there is the fact that Apple purposely slows iPhones down.  How pathetic is that!!!  I dare say Ford to program something into their cars that reduces engine power every year until you can barely do 30 km/h

Sure, Apple should have included a disclaimer and an option to disable the slow-down feature, but if you've ever used an older laptop that's shut down unexpectedly when the battery gets too low too quickly, you'd appreciate the idea that performance throttling can extend the battery life.  The nature of the phone is that it *can* be a life or death tool in emergencies, so you can see why Apple chose to maximize run time. Again, I don't agree with how they implemented it.

I chose the iPhone over Samsung for a few specific reasons - No support from Bell for Visual Voicemail on Android; no iTunes syncing with Android (Heck, I've been copying music from iTunes to my BlackBerry for years); did not want fixed-location buttons like home and back buttons; and the issue of advertising/spyware/tracking is much more prevalent on the Google platform.  I've always found Android's UI to be clunky and disjointed, with too many 'think points' when trying to do something.

With all that said, I do find iOS to be ridiculously limited in capability.  When I have to use the Outlook app because Apple Mail and Calendar apps are rubbish, I should, at the very least, be able to change the default app so I can email someone from a link on a web page.

Of course the iPhone revolutionized the smart phone. Google was basing their os on Blackberry with a physical keyboard. Then they got wind of Job's upcoming phone and did a complete about face and included a touch keyboard and touch interface. Without the iPhone, Google would have just given us more of the same instead of something different.

Steve was never afraid of shaking things up...

Samsung’s entire MO since day 1 has been to copy whatever the latest thing apple is doing. They aren’t even shy about it. They are basically a parts maker for other manufacturers that also throw together their own android phone just for fun and market it as the iPhone alternative. Whereas Apple is equal parts software and hardware designer. Their advantage is in their operating system which has always been light years ahead of android in terms of design. It’s like comparing Chevy and Cherry.

In regards to slowing down phones, every android phone has a cache that slowly fills over the life of the phone and slows down every aspect of the phone. Whether you want to call this planned obsolescence is up to you.

My cache never fills. I delete the operation systems once a month.
Predictive text and a tiny keyboard are not my friends!

It’s not what has gone the way of the dodo, it’s what its inteoduction to the market meant for society.

What were you using as a phone before Apple introduced the iPhone?

What was available prior to iTunes? (I mistakenly called it Apple Music, oops) that was a mass marketplace for buying music and not stealing it?

What edited film prior to the Mac?

What was an all-in-one computer on a tiny footprint prior to the iMac?

Your answers will be flip phone, illegal downloads, I don’t know, I can’t remember.

Further to that, the iPad revolutionized mobile computing. It was a product light years ahead of what the competition was doing.

Samsung, Microsoft, IBM, HP, etc, they all had the opportunity to make all of Apple’s legendary products first.

^ I will agree with most of what you say above with the exception of the iPad. It did not revolutionise anything. It popularised the form factor but I was already using touch interface at work for a couple of years before the iPad was out and it did far more than the iPad did when it was released. Still there is an idea that Apple somehow invented the form factor.

This gets back to Cassidy's question about what parts of Apple are watered down and it is also what makes the iPhone and iPad popular, the OS. It is simply a terribly basic OS that keeps you from doing anything that is at all outside the box but it is dead simple and anyone can use it. There are few ways to customise it and this is purposeful. It works easily for most people and it certainly aids there success.

I am interested how people will fully take to the new UI with gestures as more people move to newer iPhones. BTW the gesture UI is basically a complete copy of Blackberry 10 OS which came out almost six years ago.

Nobody knew what a tablet was until the iPad was released. The high-res screen, the battery life, the ease of use and the lightweight construction revolutionized the tablet industry and brought the technology to a mass audience.

IBM had been working on lightweight screen technology for years but they never released a consumer grade product. It’s all about how fast you can bring to market a dependable product that is positioned to lead. Like the Blackberry, nobody knows it had gesture technology because (literally) nobody used the product and Blckberry wasn’t able to bring it to market in a meaningful way. Remember when they launched their own tablet they was fraught with more problems than a Hyundai Pony? Apple’s product was perfect from the moment it was released.

Know it all.

I think perfect may be a strong word but it was very easy to use and worked very well. I am saying that generally Apple's products appeal to a large majority of people and have an ease of use for people of all levels of expertise with computers. That is why they are successful!

The are generally not the company that does anything first I will say that the original iPhone is a huge exception.

I don't use Bing search, but it's the homepage for when I open up my browser on the PC because I quite like the daily photos they select. It's a nice change from a static image.  It'd have been great if Apple opened up iOS just a little bit so that an app could change the wallpaper automatically to a daily photo - not a problem on Android, can't do it on iOS.  File sharing between apps is also another gripe of mine - I can't open a PDF from OneDrive in the Adobe Reader app - I have to copy the file to Adobe reader first, and this can waste space with large files.

As for gestures - I think Apple dropped the ball a bit in using the BB10 style interface.  The primary reason I skipped the iPhone 8 and went for the X was for the gesture based navigation, but it should be considered a gesture based home button.  You don't get the 'Peek' into a Hub style unified inbox nor any other useful information displayed when you swipe up and hold.  It'd have been great if at the very least they showed the date.

Given that there isn’t an Apple Store in Victoria yet, does anyone know who might have the new MacBook Air in stock when it goes on sale tomorrow? London Drugs?

Does the new air have a retina screen? The only reason why I never bought the Air’s was because of the lame screens.

I’d try Best Buy, btw.

Yes the new Air has a retina screen and a starting price of CAD$1499.

Thanks for the tip; I bought my iMac a decade ago at the place above Lifestyles Market on Douglas but I think they’re gone or no longer selling Macs.

What was I using before the introduction of the iPhone - a Blackberry

prior to iTunes - I downloaded music for free, to this day I don't use iTunes.  Even the latest movies, I have a computer in my movie theatre that will load any movie I want, even the movies playing in theatres downtown all for free.  who pays for downloads, that's so 20th century!

what edited film before the Mac - no idea, but I am sure that 0.00000000000000000001% of the computer market is busy buying Macs

all in one computer - that would be a laptop which has been my principle computer type for 20 years, that is the ultimate all in one computer.  Very few people I know own desktops anymore

Microsoft invented the tablet btw.  My first tablet was a Samsung which I got free from Telus on a promotion.  This year I got another free tablet from Rogers.  Personally I hate tablets and would never buy one, the only reason I have them is they are given to me

I think the only thing original Apple ever invented was the mouse (just looked it up and that isn't even true).  Huh, so just like Apple creating their better version of the smartphone (previously invented by others), then Samsung comes along and creates an even better version.  One day I am sure someone else will create an even better version
