If a business can't afford to pay a living wage, it's everybody else's fault. But if a person can't afford to live, it's their own fault, right?

Exactly...........It all boils down to the class system and "entitlement". It's this attitude in society that certain people are entitled to a better quality of life over others based on how much they have accomplished in life.

Does a university degree make a person "Better" then the person who doesn't have their name on fancy piece of paper?......Nope

Does a person who had some extra money kicking around to start up a business that by chance turned out successful better then the person who didn't?.........Nope

This whole attitude of "Entitlement" is what needs to go when it comes to ones earnings and their place in society.

We should all be Equal when it comes to quality of life. Nobody should have to live in poverty,

It’s more complex than that. I raised beer prices 50 cents once. It’s not easy or pleasant for businesses to do. So yes a bit of it is the fear of customer blowback. But fur some to think the businesses will simply “absorb” the extra cost, that’s absolutely fanciful. Nobody, including restaurant owners, want to take a 20% pay cut.

Does a person who works harder deserve a better quality of life over ones who don't work hard? YES

In general, a hard worker will not be making minimum wage. Exceptions do exist though... hard worker but absolutely no ambition...

WTF is a living wage?

A living wage is the hourly wage or salary that a person ACTUALLY needs to live to be financially secure.

A Minimum wage is an hourly wage that governments come up with to keep the price of everything else going up.

As I mentioned, I made $30 on Wednesday. I think I’ll earn zero today.

Where’s my living wage?

So wages are going up, price of meals/drinks will be going up to cover the hike. I might reconsider the recommended gratuity when the bill arrives.

You have got to be kidding..........I worked harder then any boss I ever had for years making minimum wage. Minimum wage workers are often the hardest working people in all of society.

Trust me when I was making minimum wage, and my boss was sitting up in his office making 10 times my annual income to sit behind a desk and do nothing all day long......I would say that he was not "Working Hard" for his income. He was simply "Entitled To It" right?  He had his pretty clothes and his fancy cars, and laughed all the way to the bank, while I was living in a room with a hot plate, eating hot dogs, and having to share a bathroom with everyone else that lived in the building.

Working hard is not always represented by a high wage.

Consider the jobs immigrants overwhelming take when starting out in this country. They clean hotel rooms, they clean bathrooms at your favourite stores, they do hard labour, and they take any wage offered.

Unless the economy is in a recession, either you're in a job that does not give a raise for good work, or you needed to find a new job. I've held plenty of jobs that started at or close to minimum wage, but was never still at that low wage after <1 year.

How do you define what a person needs to live to be financially secure?

Define person. A 16 year old? A 40 year old? A 60 year old?

An educated person? A dumb person? An efficient person? A lazy person?

Define financially secure.

The government intervening on economic matters usually doesn't end well.

You arent 'entitled' to anything. This isnt a jail sentence. You are free to be creative and open your own business and employ others, or choose to move and take your talents and skills to a place that pays what you think you are worth.

Not every 'boss' is sitting there playing solitaire all day long and driving his fancy car to his McMansion. A lot of business owners put their personal homes up as security to get that loan, many work 60-80 hours a week and take home less than some employees some weeks and other weeks they take more.

I was 35 years as a co-owner of a business. I spent the first 15-20 years working 6 days a week 60+hours. The first 5 years I didnt get a paycheque for weeks at a time but persevered.

It took us 20 years to become that overnight success.

The first 15 years we paid our employees a $1 or $2 more than min, the next 10 it was $5 or more above min. the last 10 years it was starting at $21 plus benefits. We recognized hard work, loyalty and a willingness to take that extra step, sometimes it meant staying a few mins late or starting a few mins early but there was always a trade off.

The moaners and complainers and the entitled ones were culled not by the owners but their co-workers.

Dont paint all business owners in the bad light cast by your poor experiences. We take the risk and put in the effort we reap the reward and more times than not will share that reward.

The economists decide I guess. They come up with the magic "Living Wage" number based on the cost of living.

To me and educated person (someone who has gone to university or college)  is just as valuable as someone who hasn't

To me a person with a disability, whether it be physical or mental  is just as valuable as someone who doesn't

Have you ever owned a business? Have you ever had to make sure you sell enough to make payroll? Have you ever considered what it takes to obtain credit from a supplier while juggling selling that product or service to ensure you have enough cash flow to pay wages, suppliers, the bank for your loan, the tax man, property taxes, insurance, utilities, accountants, lawyers?

If you sell a widget for $1 how much of that $1 is actual margin/profit? less than $.04 if you're lucky and thats only if you can sell enough to pay for all the overhead noted above....

You should try it one day

Have you ever been a single parent trying to support a family on minimum wage? You should try it one day.

There is no magic living wage number, that's my point! Magic does not exist! If wages go up, that only accelerates inflation as workers have more money to spend and businesses have to earn more money to pay their higher paid workers. Any 'catch up' is only temporary.

The type of socialist paradise you are talking about creating has been tried elsewhere, to terrible results.

Do you really think a surgeon is just as valuable as a high school dropout? From a labour perspective? Really? Maybe they're just as valuable as a person, but as a worker? Absolutely not.

I really suggest you watch some economics 101 tutorials on youtube.

BINGO!

But keep in mind that a lot of people believe that it's some how "Your Fault"  if you are a single parent trying to raise your kids on minimum wage, and because of that you should not be "Entitled" to the same quality of life as those who are not in the same situation.

I will tell you this.  A single parent raising their kids  on low wages works harder then any business owner, or company CEO ever has, or ever will. A single parent raising their kids on low wages undergoes more stress, trials, and tribulations then any business owner ever will.

I can personally vouch for this fact, after being raised by a single mother who made low wages and raised 2 kids with no help from anyone. She did it all on her own, and it was a hard, hard, hard LIFE. She sacrificed everything for me and my sibling and did nothing for herself.

Partially, I supported my wife through 8 years of university as well as raising 2 young children while paying a mortgage and working 60 hour weeks and getting alarm calls at 3AM and still getting the kids up fed and off to school for 8:30....

I chose to have 2-3 jobs while going through College and 2 were min wage part time $2.65/hr and one paid a bit more than min $3.15/hr but I did it and then after a while landed a job washing Handydart buses for $6/hr which I did for 2 years before  moving on to driving for $10/hr for 3 years while working for free with my family on my off hours to help start the business that I ended up in for 35 years...

You dont own the exclusive rights to a sob story, most folks just get on with it and stop blaming others and take responsibility
