A new floating dock was installed secretly in the Gorge waterway with the hopes of sparking a community conversation about rethinking the way we use the harbour.

After a 2018 trip to Copenhagen, Luke Mari, along with the two other owners of Aryze Development, felt something was missing when they returned home. The three friends were inspired by the working harbour, lined with people swimming on hot summer days.

Thus, Project Albero was born. The floating circular dock with a Japanese Katsura tree in the middle was built with the help of architects and engineers and was secretly pulled into the middle of the Gorge, near Banfield Park on July 15.

i'm all for secret floating docks.  but can just anyone haul anything they want to into the gorge?  i thought we were trying to get junk out of the water.

maybe permits and liability insurance and a maintenance plan are all in place.  but i'm not reading that anywhere.  dunno.

on a deeply personal note i hate floating docks.  i find almost nothing more gross than climbing a ladder with some type of slimy growth attached to it.

Legally, i bet it falls through the cracks since it's for the public. I'm no expert but I assume existing laws target private docks, for instance, if the Janion owners built a private dock on the harbour, that wouldn't be allowed. But a public platform on public property is more complicated. Maybe enforcement is complaint driven and who would complain?

i'm guessing it's only temporary anyway.  it's quite deluxe to just give away.  maybe it's bound for the owners' summer cottage later.

At a pier at low tide attempted to climb up a barnacle and muscle covered chain ladder got halfway up quite high in the air it had rusted it broke slam back into the water was cut by the muscles and barnacles.

Here's the applicable by-law.  It's not allowed.

So the question now is, will the CoV enforce this bylaw? They are pretty flexible on which bylaws they choose to enforce.

Why remove it? It’s an awesome amenity that was added at no cost to the taxpayer. Might actually take a swim to it this weekend if the weather stays warm!

I give it max 24 hours before a tent gets set up on it.

i just had an idea. a while back i thought of using bamfield park for concerts since it has a slope & could be used as a natural amphitheatre, but now this floating tree thing makes me thing the stage could be on a floating barge. that would be awesome!

How about a new floating barge park?
