If Capital Iron left downtown, the closest hardware store I can think of is Castle.

If Capital Iron left downtown, the closest hardware store I can think of is Castle.

Depending on where exactly you live in town, there's also Lowes at Tillicum, with its huge inventory.

Lowes and Castle both sell wood, drywall, and builders supplies, whereas Capital Iron is a Department Store.

The downtown Capital Irons now tiny hardware and tools section is just a shadow of what it was a decade ago.

capital iron was always good for the ability to buy one or three bolts.  or a cotter pin or an o-ring or a washer.  you don't have to buy a blister pack of 150.

A formal rezoning application has been submitted to the city.  Reliance Properties' letter to the city can be read here:  https://tender.victo...027141358342820

Mods:  this project is now known as Capital Culture District.

It looks like they intend to situate a new Art Gallery of Greater Victoria within this project. I wonder if the new library will be moving there, too.

Revised plans were submitted on Dev Tracker last week.  Also, the conservation plan for the heritage buildings was approved by the Heritage Advisory Committee in late May.

Here's a new rendering:

Current proposed tower heights are :  10, 13, and 17 storeys with podiums of 3, 4, and 5 storeys respectively.

Upon council approval, the company’s first focus will be redeveloping the parking lot in front of the Capital Iron building. Without Capital Iron being housed across the street, Stovell said they will no longer have to worry about replacing that parking during construction, as was their agreement with the business; an underground parkade is planned for that same spot but would not be accessible until after construction is finished.

Reliance is proposing to work with the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria on a new gallery in that lot, as well as live-work space for artists, a new industrial office building, and a plaza. Across the entire seven-acres, Stovell says Reliance would like to see a mix of light industrial, high tech, retail, and arts and culture uses.

If this can be developed as planned, it will be a wonderful addition to the city.

For those needing documentation, the plans are on the City's development tracker here: https://tender.victo...Number=REZ00796

I'd love to see AGGV move there, but Is it fully on board with this proposal? https://aggv.ca/thenextgallery/ only says "In recent years, our community has debated the merits of relocating the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria to a downtown location or alternatively transforming it for future generations. Today, the leadership of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is setting the stage for making our gallery all that it can be. We ask you to consider the possibilities ahead, and help us lead the way. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, please email us at thenextgallery@aggv.ca."

That's really thorough. They aren't mailing this one in. Thus, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that corner square has half a chance of being a pleasantly rewarding kind of public space, depending on how everything else plays out in the vicinity.

If this can be developed as planned...

So... dare I ask how it could be viable to do a complex project like this at seemingly high quality and with significant heritage reno being part of the deal even though there's only one legit tall tower and one other junior highrise in the mix? It doesn't seem to jibe with some other development controversies around town which I won't bother to name.

And you can bet the barely tall towers will be the greatest bone of contention for those who oppose this project.
