CTV has fired anchors Tamara Taggart and Mike Killeen as part of a shakeup in the Vancouver newsroom.

The duo had served as lead anchors on CTV News at Six since 2011, when they replaced Bill Good and Pamela Martin.

No surprises; be it Corus or Bell or anyone else its strictly a bean counter's world today. Unlike in the old days when media represented a solid, stable career it is said today especially in radio & TV that you really aren't a somebody until you've been canned at least a few times. Had a great convo with YVR radio personality Graham Hatch a few years back and he lamented the state of the industry in BC even then specifically re: its unstable nature from a career standpoint.

I wonder if Steve Darling will end up taking one of their seats. He quit his morning sports talk show a couple weeks back says he had other opportunities coming up. Darling messed up his career with his failed run with the Liberals and the sports talk show.

Anyways while Killeen and Taggart are solid news people, their ratings have been crap forever (not all on them) so something eventually had to happen.

not surprised, we stopped watching CTV at 6 for Global after Bill Good left and they put Tamara in the main seat. Maybe watched less than 1/2 dozen newscasts with them over the last 5 years or so and was not impressed with their faux seriousness.

Mike Killeen will be subbing and filling on periodically on CKNW talk radio; a competent newsreader and very likable guy but shows how far down the spout 'NW has come since the 70-80's talk show heyday of Gary Bannerman, Rafe Mair, then later Jon McComb and Philip Till in the 90's. The biz is aaaaaalllllll about the $$$$$$ now, pure and simple.

Read a recent interview with TT - evidently she has no plans to get back into broadcasting short term. Didn't realize she'd battled cancer and she and her husband have a Down's Syndrome child. Best of luck to her.

Steve Darling's latest endeavor apparently will be a run at Pt Coquitlam city council in the upcoming civic election. Guy is a narcissist who IMO really pooched his media career with that abortive attempt at on-boarding with the Liberals. Would love to see what his credentials are in terms of running a City/business like PoCo. And "no" Steve being a soccer dad don't qualify........

The worst part of CKNW is all the hosts shilling for Sierra sil? and some pillow. They immediately lose any credibility for me.

Lots of rumors percolating about a behind the scenes bloodbath at CTV Vancouver a week ago, including the turfing of several long-term employees with possibly as many as a dozen senior editors and news photographers being let go. CTV has partially confirmed the story but not the exact number of affected (ex)-staff.

The popular feeling according to my friend-in-low places cult source, is that CTV Vancouver Island could well be next.

They already seem pretty lean at CTV VI.

Yvonne now has the 5pm newscast and it doesn't look like they replaced anyone in her previous segment.

The format of the newscast was just revamped - seems odd that they would do that if they're going to make a bunch more changes.

Could Adam be on the chopping block? Or is the rumour that it's all behind-the-scenes staff?

I switched over to CHEK and look forward to the 6pm being expanded to a full hour.

I believe his 9-1PM segment is quite popular. I don't know who they would replace for that time slot who could carry the 9AM shift as a modern day version of Easingwood.

FWIW, the CTV Vancouver layoffs affected "printed" media positions, not broadcast positions, according to someone I know over at Global

Sorry - I meant Adam Sawatzky. Listed as an anchor but usually just appears for a 5 minute segment that could probably be done by the main anchor plus the Sawatzky Signoff.

Speaking of Global Vancouver, looks like they've expanded their 11pm news to a full hour, pushing the Late Show out of simulcast.

They may well have "also" involved print media positions but from my source who does work on the television end of the operation "broadcast operation" people were definitely involved - not on air staff, but editors and videographers up to and including the ENG Ops Manager. Some names have since been made public, others not so I'll stop at this point.

A few months ago he went on a lengthy on-air rant about how it's only hail if it's over 5 mm, otherwise it's tecnically only ice pellets. It went past informative joking to more like lecturing. Now CTV Victoria's new weather guy is hectoring his co-workers on the crucial difference between a tornado and a mere dust devil.

Wow.. that must have been an awkward day in the newsroom. I guess he doesn't realize Victoria TV news isn't meant to be all that serious. Even the people involved get that and don't think they're changing the world. Maybe the constant teasing and bad jokes are a bit much, but lighten up dude.

Everyone knows you never walk into a bar where Joe Perkins, Andrew Johnson and Joe Cunningham have the offensive advantage.
