...The number one issue for every single voter is their pocketbook...

If only that were true. I believe (at least in the CoV) that many people - probably many of them renters - honestly don't seriously consider the cost of civic management. They vote with their hearts more than their brains. How else to explain the overwhelming support for several long-term council members?

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting with Grace on several occasions to hear why she is running for Council and the change she hopes to represent. I think if you were to engage with her, you would find an extremely balanced view that would that would be a huge asset to this City.

She may be, I don't know her. What I pointed out where the public comments she has made. Up until last month I haven't seen anything from her remotely related to the issues that she claims to be running on. Instead her focus has been on (my opinion) extreme left wing, inflammatory, social justice issues. Topics like "rape culture in politics", "white men engaged in mass murder", "women being murdered for being women", "misogyny kills", etc, etc.

Although these are important topics, none of them are going to be resolved by a City councilor. My concern is that the council seat is just a platform and that the real issues of the City will get a second seat as we pass motions, write letters and pontificate much like we have several members doing today.

Agreed. We have more than enough SJWs on Council now. We desperately need some rational, down-to-earth balance not more of the same.

Totally get it, I can't speak to the reasoning behind the current content of her website. While it would be good, Council's are often not made up of a broad spectrum of specific expertises (accountants, child care workers, urban planners, lawyers) needed to run the City as their role is governance with staff doing administration.

From the perspective of the quality of the individual and their ability to be balanced in their reasoning as they relate to the decision making process, she has the mindset and temperament to be a great Councillor.

What are Ms Lore’s qualifications, PPP?

Know it all.
Citified.ca is Victoria's most comprehensive research resource for new-build homes and commercial spaces.

More space for young families in Victoria sounds like a no-brainer to me! As a mom of 2 young boys finding a place to live, grow and thrive in the city I love is everything. How anyone could find a problem with this statement is beyond me? And if you are curious as to what else Grace stands for, check out her website or come down to Fernwood Square and meet her. I think you will find her quite balanced in her thinking and even more importantly a great listener.

Hi Nparker! I'd be totally be game to discuss this further. I'd think you'd find me rational and down to earth. I have things to say about the content of the posts that were pointed to, why they were made, and what I think about the future of Victoria and my role on city council. I'm always game for coffee in town to discuss.

Hi! Grace here. Be happy to discuss my platform & the posts you mentioned. Politics could do with more discussing and engaging.  I think you'd find me pro-active, rational, and ready to get engaged to move this city forward. https://www.facebook.com/GraceInVic/ if you want to connect, msg me directly!

GROOOOAAAAN...another ivory tower egghead who knows better than all of us.  And a feminist raising her kids to be feminists.  Because feminism.  She'll fit right in on Council.

http://www.daughters...e.ca/gracealore

EDIT: She also identifies as a "small business owner" on her campaign page.  Yet it is next to impossible to find anything online about any small business that she owns.  She is perhaps an independent researcher, based on a cached version of her website, but only if your topic is women in American and Canadian politics.  I would argue that independent contractor and small business owner are not the same, despite both being forms of self-employment.  Obviously, she's trying to tap into the sentiment of the small business owner by self-identifying them as one of their own.

She does appear to have taught a course in - you guessed it - gender in politics at UVic as late as this last semester.

Ms. Lore appears to be presenting herself as someone she is not.  Let me anticipate her counterargument by suggesting that my casting a critical eye to her campaign and calling her on some liberties with the truth is not because misogyny.

It appears her career is marketing herself--her knowledge as an authority, similar to what Geoff Young does.

Seeing as men are the cause of most of the world's problems I don't see a big deal about having a feminst in a position of power as long as her efforts are focused on local issues.

Most positions of power in the world prior to 1970 were held by men so it makes sense that they were the root of most of its problems. Let's fast forward to the past few years though.

The largest genocide in the past decades was controlled by a woman (Mynamar)

The greatest (alleged) fraud on the medical and science community in history was undertaken by a woman (Theranos)

The largest banking (alleged) fraud in history at Wells Fargo was overseen by a woman

One of the most despised premiers in Canadian history (by men and woman alike) was a woman

I think one thing that woman have shown now that they have gained equal power to men is that they can be equally as corrupt, ruthless and power hungry as their counterparts.

One of the thinks that really irks me is when a self-employed consultant or practitioner refers to themselves as a small business owner to try and leverage the respect and trust that the public generally gives that community. Although technically correct, the vast majority of people think of a small business owner of someone who has employees other than themselves and a product or service other than their time that they are selling.

I find it amusing that Ms. Lore writes that PR should not only mean that parties get representation equal to their percentage of vote, but women should also get representation in politics equal to their percentage of the population. So does that mean if she is elected to council and winds up replacing one of the men that she should forfeit her seat to a male? Anyone care to take $100 bet on that?

Wow, the degradation of this forum is pretty pathetic. She stands for something (that you may not identify with) and is being annihilated by a bunch of internet experts that have never even taken the 4 seconds it requires to send her a simple email to ask her about her opinions and approach to governance.

I disagree. My comments, and I believe those of others, have focused on the issues and policies that Ms. Lore has publicly advanced. Nothing to do with gender, nothing personal. Fair game if you are a politician looking for support.

Ms. Lore is a new candidate. As such she is not going to ever meet or correspond with 90%+ of the people who will be voting. Those people will be researching candidates and many will be using google or other search engines (as I did) to do that. My very first comment was a recommendation that Ms. Lore clean up her social media profiles for that very reason. You can advance whatever policy statements you want, but if ALL of the web content going back years refutes or ignores those policies then I don't care how many coffee meetings or outreach calls you make, nobody is going to believe that you are anything other than an opportunist saying whatever you think you need to say to get elected.

On many occasions I have voted for people that I disagree with. They had one characteristic in common though and that was that they were sincere and stood by their beliefs. I would much rather have a principled person in office as I know that I at least have a chance of presenting my point of view and getting a fair hearing. When you elect a fraud then that is what you will always have.

Can we trade Lore in for Isitt or Madoff? I'd make that deal in a heartbeat.

Me and a bunch of other people here gave Marianne Alto a hard time about her thin resume and vague self-employed status but she turned out to be a pretty decent addition to the council table, even people who dislike her politics respect her breadth of knowledge and ability to see multiple angles on an issue. So that's no longer the deal breaker it used to be for me.

Of all the announced candidates so far I'm impressed with Lore's commitment and marketing savvy although I suppose if you have a PhD in politically-related subjects you would expect to possess a basic competence in this field.

All of these statements are absolute assumptions, terrible ones at that.

Instead of looking to the greatest women have contributed to society, you've chosen to highlight murder, fraud, despised premiers?!

To both of you, why should a women be shamed for thinking that men and women should be treated as equals? How is that a bad thing that she is trying to promote a family or a women voice on Council? If Council is supposed to be a representation of society, shouldn't we have women and mothers? You are trying to eviscerate her for seeking fair and equitable treatment that you two have likely enjoyed your entire lives as men. Once again, you call it "fair game", I call it pathetic. Take the time to meet with a potential candidate before you criticize their life's work, parenting, and civic engagement efforts.
