Me and a bunch of other people here gave Marianne Alto a hard time about her thin resume and vague self-employed status but she turned out to be a pretty decent addition to the council table, even people who dislike her politics respect her breadth of knowledge and ability to see multiple angles on an issue. So that's no longer the deal breaker it used to be for me.

Of all the announced candidates so far I'm impressed with Lore's commitment and marketing savvy although I suppose if you have a PhD in politically-related subjects you would expect to possess a basic competence in this field.

Marianne is a great councillor, for sure.

She’d make a great mayor.

To both of you, why should a women be shamed for thinking that men and women should be treated as equals? How is that a bad thing that she is trying to promote a family or a women voice on Council? If Council is supposed to be a representation of society, shouldn't we have women and mothers? You are trying to eviscerate her for seeking fair and equitable treatment that you two have likely enjoyed your entire lives as men. Once again, you call it "fair game", I call it pathetic. Take the time to meet with a potential candidate before you criticize their life's work, parenting, and civic engagement efforts.

HAHAHAHA you said that feminism is about equality. That’s cute. Did you happen to just step out of a time machine from the 1960s, per chance?

Baffles me that someone would go to the effort of launching a campaign while leaving a social media trail that makes Helps look like she is far right on SJW issues.

I think it's refreshing to see someone such as Grace Lore,  be true to her beliefs and values and have the courage and strength to stand up for what she believes in.  The silent majority usually doesn't have the guts to do the same.  I'm excited to see how things will unfold for her in her campaign.

An article from Grace's partner on why he chose to change his last name.

Grace, my wife, was simply not taking my name—she would not ignore the historical roots, the exchange of women as property and a practice where women became simply their husbands’ wives. But I didn’t want her as property; I didn’t think she was subordinate or the lesser! My wife’s strong and unmoving opinion should not and did not come as a surprise to me, but I did want a family and I did want a shared name for that family

Just what we need – someone who has a “strong and unmoving opinion”.  That's a good way to get things done when working with others.

I agree with this 100%.

Alto is by far the most pragmatic person on council ... as well as being fundamentally unflappable.

She is definitely the only councillor I could ever see as Mayor ... and she'd certainly be a damn good one.

As you called it Bob.

Yep, I did call it; yet my post defending my position was mysteriously deleted. All the while, our friend gets to continue denigrating our character with impunity. Good times.

Well, one thing’s clear, and that’s Ms Lore is not a candidate that participants to this forum are likely to support.

I do want to ask that we all refrain from making things personal. We might not always agree but let’s keep it professional, please.

Bob, a moderator did flag your comment yesterday. It wasn’t deleted but it is being reviewed.

Almost like VV is not a representative sample of City of Victoria voters...

Must be the demographics. I find that many of my millennial relatives post their entire life story on social media. We have this constant back and forth about 'transparency' and privacy.

My comments here have been related to the social media posts and the picture they paint of Ms. Lore. I would have a tough time hiring or voting for someone that I viewed as having such a lapse of judgement. I also accept that that could just be me and being older than 35 puts me into the category of curmudgeon and being out of touch with what younger voters want and expect from their politicians.

That is my point. What are her beliefs, what she posts on social media or what she says in her campaign materials?

You could say the same for any newbie candidate. Jeremy Loveday's social media was all poetry and food security before he announced.

You seem overly upset about her.

I think there is a difference between food and poetry and advocating extremist SJW viewpoints. And yes, I don't think that City council needs another person with those views.

I noted this morning that she has dropped the 'feminist' and small business owner descriptions from her twitter profile so that at least shows that she is willing to take some advice.

I wonder if she’s sanitized her profile or she’s just no longer those things. I mean assume it’s the former, as only politicians who don’t identify as “progressives” have SECRET AGENDAS.

Loveday has come into his own, though, hasn't he? Sure, he's a typical Victoria hardcore left winger, but he's no Marxist.

I'd agree.

People that don't agree with his left of centre views probably won't vote for him, but he does seem to make a genuine effort to hear other views outside.

I don't think it is fair to tar him as mini-Ben any more. He has established a presence separate from Ben and is IMO a better councillor.

A not especially difficult achievement.
