It’s time to make good on Isitt’s promise to open the public treasury for the common good. Push forward on his plan for a municipal income tax. Cut the police budget and reallocate that money to social justice.

Satire is supposed to have a Swift-ian twist at the end. Unless the TC lopped it off for space. It reads sincere but somebody with the same name is listed as being with a big local investment firm.

Are you totaling up reigns with breaks? Because Geoff Young lost a council term when he unsucessfully ran for mayor.

I am only looking at people that were elected and Young's years are not continuous.   Young ran for mayor in 1999 and then sat out 2002

I can't get a good read on it. It comes across to me as mockery, but it's hard to be sure with printed media.

Well that is always the default answer, things would have been worse if we didn't intervene!

 

If we look at the history of the housing market we see brief periods of rapid growth followed by longer periods of flattening as economics catch up. The cycle we are in is no different then what we have had in the past. 

The end result is still that the economics don't catch up in the periods of flattening, and over the long term housing costs rise faster than income and immensely faster than inflation.

Just going through the numbers, the following are the longest serving people on municipal councils in this region  ( I think this is correct, but if you find someone I missed, let me know)

Stew Young 25 years, though from what I remember he was a CRD electoral area director before Langford was formed but I do not know for how long

How long has Susan Brice been going in Saanich?  Either there was another Brice in there somewhere or she's been at it for ages, as that name has been familiar for a very long time.

On another note it was interesting that Ben Isitt's vote total fell 2014 to 2018 while Loveday actually increased by a lot. Maybe Victoria has reached "peak Ben"?

If I recall correctly, the rental housing increases in the 50s and 70s were motivated by federal incentives. The last real spurt which happened in the 70s was largely instigated by MURBS. When that program came crashing down in 1981 there was a dearth of purpose built rental housing for at least 20 years.

I've spoken to a couple of people who are totally disenchanted with the Victoria results and said apart from a couple of councillors, they didn't vote for anyone now ruling the roost. People seem quite put out.

Isn’t that the case with every election? That some people are going to be unhappy with the results as the people they vote for don’t get in? It would be weird if you didn’t know anyone disenchanted with the results.

As I've said before, I think a lot of people are stunned that Helps would have been voted back in, in the wake of the latest Elsner revelations.

I think a lot of people never really heard about the allegations or didn't follow too closely or believed the co-chairs' defense that they simply acted on the advice of lawyers as directed. We tend to operate in a bubble where every David Broadland article and Adam Stirling tweet is extensively discussed but there's a whole universe out there where that stuff is unknown.

Meanwhile, I spotted a Stephen Hammond sign yesterday on Quadra near McKenzie. A little outside the border.
