2018 municipal election results:

Mayor: Tait (2,299, re-elected)

Mayor runners-up:

Pearson (1,623)

Rhodes (135)

Council:

Parkinson (2,250, re-elected)

Logins (2,197, re-elected)

McMath (2,184)

Bateman (1,785)

St-Pierre (1,579)

Beddows (1,572)

Council runners-up:

Stewart (1,536)

Kasper (1,358)

Haldane (1,217)

Armour (1,070)

Eve (1,037)

Rossner (884)

Jonassen (747)

Original post: Maja Tait, the first-term mayor of Sooke and a former councillor, is being challenged by councillor Kevin Pearson.

Tait's mayoralty was contentious in that she left for maternity leave just one year following the November 2014 municipal elections. She returned on April 1st of 2016. During her absence councillor Rick Kasper took over her role as a CRD director. Although the role was to be an interim position, upon Tait's return there was some drama as Kasper wasn't all too happy to relinquish the position after Tait's absence. Even the mayor's husband got involved and there was a dispute between him and Kasper. Police investigated but closed the case.

Several Sooke councillors are also not seeking re-election for another term.

Sooke has a history of volatile elections

2002 1 incumbent defeated

2003 the need a by-election to elect one new councillor and a new mayor

2005 only two people elected in 2002 run for re-election

2008 2 incumbent councillors defeated

2011 2 incumbent councillors defeated

2014 no defeats

This is very rare for municipal councils in this region

Another thing unique to Sooke is the amount of women serving as elected officials. In 2014 five women and two men were elected.

In this election councillors Bev Berger and Kerrie Reay are not seeking re-election while councillor Kevin Pearson is pursuing the mayor's seat, so three out of five council seats are up for grabs (leaving Ebony Logins, Rick Kasper and Brenda Parkinson as the three running for re-election). Is it good for a municipality to experience such a major rate of turnover?

Not unique to Sooke - Esquimalt has a single male councillor with a female mayor

I drove throughout the munis today and from what I saw at the Sooke voting station at Edward Milne folks were moving through very quickly thanks to two machines.

A very young and progressive council to take Sooke into what is promising to be a period of serious growth. As far as I can see, this election was ‘New Sooke’ trouncing ‘Old Sooke.’ Looks like a cohesive bunch, and maybe now there will be an end to fist-fights in the municipal hall parking lot!

2018 results. Turnout this year was much lower than in 2014. Consider that despite four years of population growth the highest tally was Tait with 2,299 votes. In the last election she received 2,527 votes, or 9% fewer votes this time around.

Mayor: Tait (2,299, re-elected)

Mayor runners-up:

Pearson (1,623)

Rhodes (135)

Council:

Parkinson (2,250, re-elected)

Logins (2,197, re-elected)

McMath (2,184)

Bateman (1,785)

St-Pierre (1,579)

Beddows (1,572)

Council runners-up:

Stewart (1,536)

Kasper (1,358)

Haldane (1,217)

Armour (1,070)

Eve (1,037)

Rossner (884)

Jonassen (747)

2014 results

Tait (2,527) (mayor)

Reay (2,171)
Logins (2,116)
Parkinson (2,034)
Pearson (1,870)

Thanks for putting those numbers up for comparison, Mike K. It wasn’t exactly a spanking, but I think there is meaning in Pearson, Haldane, and Kasper not being elected. Logins and Parkinson have usually demonstrated themselves to be non-partisan and thoughtful, so I’m not surprised by their returns.

You're absolutely correct, though, that the old guard of Sooke has been pushed aside. It's quite a massive change, actually.

So hopefully council will now be able to focus more on building the infrastructure Sooke needs as it continues to rapidly grow. It's literally a boomtown out there if you look at all the development that's going on for a community of ~14,000 people.

What's also interesting is how much the lowest council candidate slid in 2018. The threshold slid from 1,807 in 2014 to 1,572, a 13% drop!

Yes, voter turnout could have been higher.... But this seems to be a mandate to guide development in a more sustainable direction. The builders are already here—the Sooke Hills are turning into suburbs—and in 30 years you won’t know where Langford ends and Sooke begins. What will Sooke look like? This is a turning point.

Right, the gap between the two is closing, for sure, and the thoroughfare between Sooke and Renfrew will also see major changes over the next two decades.

This is breaking news, I should add. There will be more coverage before too long.

The special in-camera meeting has now been posted to the municipality's website but it has no information in regards to the nature of the meeting.
