[Fernwood] Nest & Haven | Condos; office; retail | 12 & 6-storeys

Are there any other major developments on the Fernwood border? I don't know if the community association has ever had to look at a relatively major mid-rise development before.

This definitely expands the downtown urban containment area so we are likely to hear the same concerns North Park had about the St. Andrews/Save-on development.

And we know how that project has ushered in the apocalypse. 

The Wade would have been one of them. And the projects up on Johnson Street. This would be the largest project that Fernwood would have looked at since Vic High opened though.

And this project is barely in Fernwood, but that makes no difference to our wacky neighbourhood boundaries.

I'm inclined to agree. Sacrificing irreplaceable surface parking and a strip mall for some new apartments? Does that seem like an appropriate thing to do in a neighbourhood full of old apartments?* Does that seem like a responsible thing to do during a prolonged housing crisis?**

I'm sure some crank will note how the vast majority of the existing apartments that the community currently lives in, depends upon, and enjoys were built by developers during past development booms. Nevertheless, the main point here is this: adding some new apartments now and in this particular spot probably wouldn't be an instant solution to all of the world's problems. So why bother?

Not to mention some parties will make a buck or two along the way. And what about that poor laundromat?

That's the $55 million dollar question.

This project pretty much addresses everything....rentals, childcare, affordable ownership condos, market condos....really curious as to what Ben and gang will have to say about it.

Something like: "Great project, but six inches too tall and half a block too far over."

I'd say the smaller buildings could use some refinement. They're really bland, almost undefined. I'm not suggesting that the main building looks like a work of art, but for what it is at least it seems to be "finished". You follow me?
