Yes, the Feds and Province will be driving much of this process.

My main area of interest is how it pertains to City Hall and Victoria, that's why I bring up the hypotheticals of:

  • Commercial activity in Beacon Hill Park
  • BC Hydro lands in Rock Bay, maybe a River Rock Casino-style of entertainment/conference complex
  • Some sort of Inner Harbour presence, again commercial/art/food/culture

Agreed, in other words, municipal politicians should stick to running a municipality and work with creating some sort of presence for local FN ie commerce and culture

Ah, and therein is the rub.

Helps et al are fiercely opposed to a casino after learning that money was being laundered in casinos on the mainland. So what then if the First Nations want a casino on the Rock Bay site? Or is that Helps plan all along, to keep the license out of the downtown core until such a time as Rock Bay is ready to be developed?

If I recall, the FN bands are already being paid $250K (or is it $500K) a year for the Rock Bay lands. The CRD is leasing the land for sewage treatment needs that they don't have.

I am sure that if Helps has poo poo'ed a casino it was only after she consulted with the two chiefs on their intentions after that lease expires.

How does one poo poo a casino if there's no sewage treatment?

Wednesday’s Sooke Truth & Reconciliation features Adam Olsen; Carey Newman urges discomfort and learningEmail from Margaret Critchlow, published on SPN with permission

The Sooke Truth and Reconciliation Group meets from noon to 2 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month at the Lazzar Building, 6221 Lazzar Rd (east of the Victoria-bound park and ride, and across from the high school). All are welcome to attend.

Please plan to join us on January 9th. This month’s speaker will be Adam Olsen. Adam is an Indigenous MLA representing the Green Party in the riding of Saanich and the Islands. He is the Green Party spokesperson for the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation and he will talk to us about what they are doing.

"In closing, with his permission*, I am pasting Carey Newman’s recent piece on Allyship below our signatures. It supports us to move toward, not away from, truth and reconciliation, to get messy, make mistakes, listen, unlearn, and take action."

So we are now taking advice from an artist....this is getting better all the time... :muching_out:

Based on his twitter feed, he's got some serious anger management issues to sort out.

If any Mayor in the country created a group to recommend strategies for reconciliation and choose 100% of the members to be settlers they would probably lose their job. Mayor Helps doesn’t seem to see any issues with choosing a group that is 100% FN however. I guess the question is whether reconciliation is really a goal.

It may be a goal, it's but probably secondary to the goal of getting her name in the national press as often as possible. Mark my words: Lisa Helps has designs on bigger things than being mayor of the CoV.

Reconciliation is most definitely not a goal for Helps.

Helps goal is to endlessly stir the pot in order to garner personal attention, to continuously pander to her base, and to maintain a steady public profile which sells her as a SJW and left wing zealot ... all perfect for a federal NDP candidate from what is ultimately one of the (if not the) furthest left wing geographical areas in Canada.

For all her efforts at marketing herself as a fighter for the little man, and purveyor of social justice for the less fortunate ... Helps is the classic lyin' politician, out only to live off the taxpayer  in order to re-make first Victoria, and then either B.C. or Canada in her own image.

She'd make a great death-cult leader.

Yup, if anyone is going to make a run for Murray Rankins seat she probably stands a far better chance than Isitt these days.

We have another example today of why reconciliation is pretty much impossible in BC.

Federal government approves a pipeline project. Province approves project. All related First Nations agree to the project. But hereditary leaders of one clan within one First Nation, which are apparently different than the regular FN leaders, don't like the project so the entire thing becomes another Made in BCTM **** show.

Supporters at the camps remain opposed to the construction of the Coastal GasLink pipeline in the territory, despite the fact elected band councils along the route have made agreements with the company.

But the hereditary chiefs said that under Wet'suwet'en law, the band councils don't have authority or jurisdiction over what happens in the nation's traditional territory.

"They're not the title holders or the caretakers of the land. The hereditary chiefs are," said Madeek.

The elected chief and council only have authority over reserve lands, he said.

So now even if you sign a deal with the elected chief and council, someone else claiming to be a heredetary chief can overule that decision and the land controlled by those heredetary chiefs is whatever they say it is and not just limited to treaty or reserve lands?

You know that the BC NDP isn't going to do anything about it and if the pipeline company just pays off these new chiefs then 100 more will appear along the route.
