This is such a ridiculous program. I forgot to file my spec tax on time, but filed just after the deadline.

Dated April 5, I received a letter with zero owing, which means I guess I had filed just in time but after the deadline nonetheless.

But yesterday a letter arrived, with a whopping tax invoice, dated April 3rd. I guess Canada Post lost the letter and delivered it late.

So much bureaucracy for this regime, letters flying every which way. How many millions does this program cost to administer every year?

Better living through more bureaucracy is the NDP motto.

Yes this tax is an annual reminder of how much I hate the NDP.

Never in the history of taxation has a government required its citizens to proactively declare an annual exemption, when 99% of people are exempt. It’s asinine.

It’s a pain in the ass for me, a person who is proficient with computers and approximating an average level of cognitive ability.

But I can’t imagine how burdensome this might actually be to someone with cognitive decline, unfamiliar with computers, has a million other things going on in life, etc. It’s one more thing to do, for absolutely no reason, other than to make up jump through a hoop at threat of financial penalty. I already declare this is my primary residence on my federal taxes. This spec tax asks for your SIN, doesn’t it? So link up the damn data on your end if you care so much.

It’s really one of the worst burdens a western government has ever imposed on its citizens in peace time, simply because of how annoying it is. It’s the definition of lazy, wasteful, ineffectual governance-by-optics.

We got a bill for an outrageous amount of money too. Nasty way to remind us to declare. I feel like sending them an outrageous bill for nothing….
