Helps said that partnership sets a precedent for what can be done in the city and the region to work together to bring more affordable housing.

Coun. Geoff Young, the lone vote of opposition, said he was concerned about the impacts of a large project on the neighbourhood, and suggested several smaller projects throughout the city would be preferable.

Young must weep every time he drives by Begbie Street, those low-rise buildings placing an unbearable burden on all of us.

Victoria considers $1 million-plus grant for Fernwood housing project

More project details needed before council decides whether to exceed maximum grant amount

In discussion, Couns. Geoff Young and Stephen Andrew were opposed to allocating the larger figure, but voiced support for a $500,000 grant. Andrew took issue with the application not specifying exactly where the increased grant funds would be spent, adding applicants for housing fund moneys “better come with their ducks in a row.”

Other councillors noted a request for a larger amount would mean going back and changing the reserve fund’s requirements.

Sure it's only my tax dollars. My pockets are deep. Spend away!

Endless demands on peoples money with a complete disregard to the fact that a lot of people in Victoria are really stretched thin. Have these politicians not gone into a grocery store lately?

If you are against the funding or project make your case. Do  your comments really add to understanding your concerns..

Yes we have inflation. The city council has little if any control over that. Perhaps all the more reason to support lower income housing.

We elect council to spend our tax money. If they do not spend it in ways that you do not like use you vote to change council membership as I assume you will.

Council has to make the best decision they can that they as a democratic group have been elected to do.

No .one makes perfect decisions.

Just because you do not agree with the democratic decisions made does not make them a joke.

They are by definition the best decision that that group of elected people could make on that point that day. They are elected to make decisions not only the decisions that you like.

If you think that you can do better run for office or support others who run who have opinions like yours. Constant negative comments like those above about council decisions on its own are counter productive.

I think you might actually believe this.

Moderation is rather embarrassing as to their stated position, One almost has to assume that it is one of the usual shills for TV that attempts to stifle discussion.

One of the attributes of a democracy is that it is perfectly acceptable to criticize elected officials especially when there decisions are inept and irresponsible. being elected is not the equivalent of making the best or even good decisions.

But moderation already knows this and is simply attempting to manipulate the discussion. And yes I am assuming that proposition since the alternative is that Moderation, to pit it kindly, has a severe intellectual deficit.

Our democracy is based on passing the authority of much decision making to those who have been elected by the population.

Freedom of speech is not any part of what I said. I am simply suggesting that just calling the decisions of our elected official as wrong or a joke does little to address the decision. Better to suggest alternatives, get involved in public meeting or support the election of people who hold similar views to themselves. Making derogatory remarks about people is also not helpful if you want to address issues and have a constructive conversation.

We are now way off topic. I rest my opinion.

Yes, only another 2 or 3 years and Vic High should be open for business again. Seriously, 3 new schools could have been built in the time it has taken for this sysmic upgrade.

Such a great neighbourhood. A cool area and perfect for the “missing middle”.

Vic high has indeed been slow, however when it comes to structural upgrades there is no compromise to the integrity - remediation projects are incredibly complex.

No one will remember how long it took 10 years from now. Good things take time.

I bet the students who had to spend their entire high school experience at the "fake" Vic High will remember.

Unfortunately not every outcome benefits everyone. Those students likely developed some good life skills migrating between institutions.

Looks like most of the concrete work on the south side is complete. I’ll snap a photo this weekend.

Great!

That’s quite the underground entrance. These projects always include plenty of parking.
