Victoria Watcher, while I don't agree with everything you say, I respect everything you say, because you do it as dialogue and without degradation.

I see right through that passive aggression.

Inside the building, tensions continued to escalate until a fire alarm was pulled. Once the Oak Bay Police and the Oak Bay Fire Department arrived, the building was evacuated and the event was officially over.

For his part, Painter felt the evening was a successful show of support for SOGI 123 and the LGBTQ+ community.

“There were so many people here tonight,” he said. “It shows that the South Island, we’re not about hate. We’re all about love.”

these protesters are very foolish.  they are putting their personal gratification (successfully closing down one talk) ahead of the cause (this disruption has gained jenn smith more publicity than an incident-free event would have).  but that's the way many of them think.   or don't think.

there is a reason that radicals in the lgbtq+ community are more likely to be poor unemployed on welfare incarcerated and yes suicidal.  and it's a perverse group mentality or severe victim mindset.  this mindset is not at all present in the vast majority of the larger lgbtq+ community (where personal and professional economic success mostly exceeds that of their straight counterparts).

but among the most radical their mindset is counterproductive to their own life success.  it's too bad they are too ignorant to see it.  but if facts were pointed out they'd likely just shout them down.

This is a symptom of society itself, not just the lgbtq+ community. Everyone is responsible for making a safe space for everyone else, nobody is responsible for themselves.

and our society allows it. what are the chances the person pulled the fire alarm will be charged? it’s not far off of yelling “fire” in a crowded theatre no?

Do we all recall the Victoria comedy show that tried being controversial only for the purpose of selling tickets. I would’ve never never knew that was happening in the park or there was a book for sale.

You’ve obviously been to one of my windsor park pavilion parties. Still disappointed they didn’t remake it in a tudor style. https://youtu.be/NzBB5D0PWrU

I think the more important issue raised by the Oak Bay debacle is free speech. I was disappointed but not surprised by the behaviour of the "protesters." It was a replay of the demonstration against the removal of the JAM statue. There, a band of young activists and a sprinkling of the old familiar faces we all know chanted and shouted down anybody who attempted to speak. Anybody who disagrees with their SJW credo is a racist, bigot, etc.

Suppressing free speech is a very dangerous path to take. If a society cannot tolerate divergent views and discuss policy in a reasonably civil manner the the only way to resolve disagreements is violence. Nobody is going to be very happy if it comes to that.

No however the protesters agenda is to shout down the speaker and deny the speaker the opportunity to exercise free speech rights. As clearly what happened when the fire alarm was pulled and the usual crew of activists hijacked the discussion

I don't think that is true. I think no matter the side in this day and age is to shout down the other.

Just so you know, the protesters were told the RCMP was there "undercover" to police the situation.

RCMP has no jurisdiction in Oak Bay. It was actually the Sons of Odein, doesn't help the situation of it being something other than conventional speech.

No, the protestors can speak all they want, just not at the same time and location where someone else is speaking.

I don't think that's how protest speech works...
