Not a bad idea to have one on your pet’s collar.

Saanich might ban retractable leashes.

At the end of Glendenning Road in Saanich, plenty of happy and leashed dogs can be found, but soon the type of leash you use for dogs in the municipality could be policed.

While discussing the People, Pets, and Parks Strategy, an amendment was introduced to ban retractable leashes.

“Retractable leashes are generally dangerous to both people, pets, and the environment,” Coun. Karen Harper said in Monday’s council meeting. “So there are multiple reasons for doing that.”

Council voted to ban retractable leashes across the entire municipality, with Mayor Dean Murdock opposing.

“I wasn’t personally supportive of removing retractable leashes as an option, but that is the direction that council chose to go with,” Murdock told CHEK News on Tuesday. “And that will mean when you are using our parks you are going to have to have your dog on a two-metre leash.”

Chris Dancey of Bone & Biscuit at Uptown says it’s nice to be able to offer a variety of types of leashes.

“I do sell them. We do get the request on occasion,” Dancey said. “As as retailer, having that offering is pretty important.  I think it’s become a popular item for those people that don’t want to do the tight-on-leash walking.”

I'm not sure they need to be banned but I agree they likely do not help train the animal.  Just the other day I was walking down the sidewalk, and a guy and his dog were approaching.  No leash.  When I was about 3m away, he made some type of command to the dog and it came much closer to him as he slowed his walk, but did not stop.  After we passed, he said "release" (I think) and then the dog went more casual.  It was cool to see such a well-trained dog.

This is so outside the purview of what a municipal council should be doing. How have we let this happen?

I think the rule only applies inside Saanich parks.

But yes, it might be a bit much.  The original idea of the retractable leash is to let the dog explore a bit more widely, when the space warrants it, then rein them in as required.  The "problem" of course is when the human is on one side of the Galloping Goose, the dog is on the other, and the cyclist comes down between them.

Sidney moves closer to allowing backyard hens

Council voted Monday to ask staff to prepare a bylaw change to approve backyard hens, which is expected to come early in the new year

Cherie MacLure, who has lived in Sidney for 11 years, said she and her three children all did celebratory dances when they heard that council was moving closer to approving backyard hens.

Let me guess. The chicken dance?

This Labradoodle ate $4K in cold, hard cash. Most of it came back out

'He didn't do this on purpose,' says Pennsylvania pooch's owner

https://www.cbc.ca/r...-cash-1.7075889

This just confirms my theory.  Any "poodle" type dog that is over 14 inches tall should not be allowed to exist.  They are an abomination.  Also, way to get your landscaper in trouble with the IRS, for your little bit of attention-seeking.

Cecil is the Pittsburgh couple's beloved pet Labradoodle. And the money was $4,000 US in crisp $50 and $100 bills, withdrawn earlier that day and set aside on the counter to pay for a landscaping project.

Two dogs shot and killed after sheep attacks in Cobble Hill

The RCMP said at least one sheep will likely need to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries

A pit bull and a Rottweiler were shot on Jan. 14 by a farmer who told the RCMP the dogs were attacking her sheep.

Tensions are high in the tiny farming community of Cobble Hill after two dogs were shot and killed Sunday morning for allegedly attacking sheep.

“From what I’ve seen, there is a lot of upset because nobody knows the real circumstances here,” Cobble Hill director Mike Wilson said Wednesday. “We are a rural community. We’ve got farmers who need to protect what they’ve got. At the same time, we need to look after our animals. My wife and I are both dog lovers. When we looked at this, we were very upset, obviously. From our point of view, I’m sure there are other people feeling exactly the same way.”

A Cobble Hill resident reported his two dogs missing just before 9:30 Sunday morning to ROAM, which helps to locate missing animals.

ROAM created a Facebook post with a photo of the dogs, a pit bull called Freckles and a Rottweiler called Skye.

Shortly after, the organization received a text from the owner saying his dogs had been shot. One was dead and the other died en route to the vet in Langford.

ROAM turned off comments on the post, saying: “There are no words to express how we feel. We know there are going to be very, very, very strong feelings regarding this.”

The file remains under investigation by Shawnigan Lake RCMP, said Cpl. Alex Berube.

Keep your dogs on a leash in farming areas. You don’t hear much about dogs shot here, but it sure happens.
