Canada's Leylah Annie Fernandez is through to the semifinals of the U.S. Open. The 19-year-old from Montreal defeated No. 5 seed Elina Svitolina 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 today, becoming just the third Canadian woman in the Open Era to reach the semis at the tournament joining Carling Bassett-Seguso (1984) and Bianca Andreescu (2019).

Montreal's Felix Auger-Aliassime, the No. 12 seed, joined fellow Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez in the U.S. Open semifinals on Tuesday after his opponent Carlos Alcaraz of Spain retired in the second set.

The 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime was up 6-3, 3-1 when 18-year-old Alcaraz waved over his trainer before calling an end to his tournament.

All our tennis ladies seem to have one or two good years and then disappear from sight.

Hope this doesn't happen to Fernandez.

He just won it.

The no vaccine guy is top of the world. Too bad all those other players took the vaccine. Seems to have affected them.

The Australian loser is a spoil sport. Even though he won some kind of a silver serving tray. I thought he was going to throw it away, like a frisbee.

Novak Djokovic withdrew from the Canadian Open in Montreal on Thursday because of his COVID-19 vaccination status. Since Djokovic is not vaccinated, he is not allowed to enter Canada.

While Djokovic is forced to miss the tournament in Montreal, his status for the US Open is also in jeopardy. That tournament is slated to begin on Aug. 29, and Djokovic may have to withdraw because the U.S. does not allow unvaccinated foreigners to enter the country.

So refugees coming to stay here permanently couldn't possibly overwhelm the healthcare system, but one healthy tennis player here for a few days could.

I think the key distinction here is this: if you're obviously and self-evidently fit and healthy then it's also highly probable that you're spreading something virulent.

Kind of like how if you've never committed a felony or misdemeanor in your entire life then it's also highly probable that you're a terrorist (2001 to 2010) or a deranged shooter (2010 to 2020) or an insurrectionist (2020-present).

A feisty Novak Djokovic weathered a bizarre form slump to defeat Tommy Paul in straight sets 7-5 6-1 6-2, advancing to his 10th Australian Open final, where he’ll take on third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Djokovic stormed to a commanding 5-2 lead in the opening set, but a litany of unforced errors and some inspired tennis from Paul saw the American break Djokovic twice to level proceedings at 5-all.
