^ My bad, almost 60% pay increase. If we increase the pay to council then does that mean we get better quality UVIC Phd candidates running for office?

I say we cut their pay by 60%. That way they will be motivated to put in so few hours of work each week that they won't have time to pontificate and make useless declarations that they have no control over.

I don’t know. $70k still isn’t very much money.
If anything, I’d say they’ve been underpaid for many years.

Not when you consider the skill level they bring to the job.

maybe they should look more at the average income of a citizen of Victoria..  then also consider that council is not meant to be a full time job (you can if you want it to be but when your population is under 100k it doesn't have to be..) personally i think they do alot of useless busy work that doesn't need to be done while ignoring the real work that should be done

A pay increase equal to more than half my annual salary?  No wonder I'm considering relocating out of Victoria.

At least the socialists on city council will be donating it all back to their favorite charity, right?

If I thought we'd get something resembling representation, I might not object... but with the current crew, it amounts to rewarding bad behavior.

I was not aware that Helps had a Ph.D. to be called phony.

Yep I was shaken once one of her classmates who I unfortunately respect said she was doing everything right

That is my earlier point. It has become a full time job because council keeps jumping into issues that have nothing to do with municipal politics. That is their choice but they can't then use that as justification for a massive pay raise.

The jump from $41k to $70k does seem excessive. Did councils from prior terms not deserve $45, $50 or $60k? What is it about today’s council that warrants such a jump?

If it were my way, council remuneration would be tied to years served.

What about tying it to some sort of outcomes? I dunno , reducing homelessness, or getting projects completed on budget?

While that’s a good idea, it might create scenarios where the beneficiaries are future councillors rewarded by the efforts of their predecessors.

Then maybe performance bonuses tied to outcomes?

Yeah, that’s tough. Staff are ultimately the executors of council’s wishes so it’s their performance that would drive council’s performance.

Thanks for the link!  Just did the survey, though they probably won't like much of what I had to say. :)
