Yeah, that’s tough. Staff are ultimately the executors of council’s wishes so it’s their performance that would drive council’s performance.

so the pay of the boss is tied to overall performance of the entity. that’s how it works in the real world.

A mayor/council raise goes into effect in the following term. to avoid the appearance of voting themselves a raise.

Tying salary to performance means politicians would abandon long-term projects that don't offer immediate benefits. They'll just spend their term chasing small projects they can call "wins".

See, in the business world the boss sets the agenda, the employees follow it through. In politics, the mayor and council both set the agenda and follow through so there is more incentive to avoid unpopular projects with little political payoff.

Are we sure the raise will apply in November of 2022 and not before then? They’ll be voting for this barely a year into their new term, with three more years to go.

Also note that Ben is already sounding the alarm that we must not let the 2020 CoV byelection shift the CoV council to the right. Which is funny in as much as no matter who wins, Ben will still have the power to control the council and fulfill his own agenda.

It's funny how worried he appears about any diversity of viewpoints being allowed. And how he immediately tries to establish a false narrative that anyone who doesn't subscribe to his own views (insults veterans whenever possible, help to hush up sexual harrassment, police bad, hate religion one say but love it the next and so on) must be a right-winger.

But he has learned well from the dictators he emulates. Christ help us if he gets the power to enact his dictator fetish any further.

perhaps via a referendum question on the by-election ballot?

If it were my way, council remuneration would be tied to years served.

So you would reward and encourage people to serve multiple terms? That surprises me.

I'd rather see politicians paid the median income of those they represent.

...those they are are supposed to represent or those they actually do represent? Probably a significant difference there.

Don’t forget this is not a full time job, and the $41k per year remuneration reflected that fact. Raising the pay to $70k is extremely high for a part-time job doing what council does.

Councillor Young runs a company and other councillors also serve at the CRD level, which occupies their time. There is no expectation for these councillors to give as much time to their role on council as a councillor that elects to treat being a councillor as a full time job and gives their time accordingly, sometimes with unnecessary pursuits relative to their job as a councillor.

Thanks for the link! Just did the survey, though they probably won't like much of what I had to say. :)

Don’t worry, they just ignore anything that doesn’t confirm their views!

Case in point. Here is the first question from the survey. Many people would say that clean streets, safety and security or responsible taxation should be priorities but of course none of those are represented and you have no ability to add any choices. Staff simply decide what you can select and ignore anything that they don't want feedback on.

6. Please rank the Strategic Objectives from most to least important.

Yeah, this question bugged me also.  Obviously "Good Governance" is #1 but after that?  Not much to choose when one reads between the lines.

Where's "Transportation Efficiency" as an option?

Where's "Road, Infrastructure, and Civic Maintenance and Upkeep"?

Does upvoting "Strong, Livable Neighbourhoods" mean one is just supporting NIMBYism?

Does upvoting "Sustainable Transportation" mean nothing but support for more bike lanes?

And, above all, what happened to "Amalgamation"?

It's not a survey of what YOU think is important.

It's a survey of what YOU think is most important among the things THEY think are most important.

Is there still only the one formally declared candidate?

So the question is, as spanky first surmised may be the plan here, will the council salary question end up as part of the by-election as a referendum? It would be a shock if it did, but the pool did not.

i don't think the pool will go to referendum this soon.  unless there is lots of background going on right now.

Someone help me please in understanding what Prosperity and Economic Inclusion means?

What possible connection could this topic have with municipal governance?

There’s no better time to assess the sentiment of the community. There doesn’t have to be a concrete plan, just a general question.

i don't think so.  what question would they ask now?

it won't be "do you want a new pool".  we are well beyond that.

they will be afraid to ask where is should be.

i'm really not sure what question would make any sense for this coming by-election.

I would ask exactly that, do you want a new pool? We’re back to the starting line with this thing. Give taxpayers a voice.
