Good morning,
It’s time to announce our next hire: a municipal reporter.
Today is what I’ve been thinking of as Municipal Monday (nobody else calls it that, but they should). It’s the day when the whole team pitches in to cover the 13 municipalities of Greater Victoria—the big decisions, the incremental changes, and, increasingly, the people throwing their hats in the ring for the upcoming election.
The municipal reporter will be our eyes and ears across Victoria’s local councils, seeking out the most important stories coming out of local governments and diving deep into them. They’ll also be our municipal election correspondent, responsible for creating tools to keep us all informed of the issues and people duking it out for our votes.
In order to create this vital position, we need 500 people to join the more than 1,300 people who have become Capital Daily members this year. Can you help us?
Municipal governments determine what our streets look like, what our homes are allowed to be used for, how we get to work, and who our neighbours are. They influence our taxes, our most basic services, and the way our city changes or resists change.
And yet municipal governments are largely ignored in favour of the high drama and big budgets of federal and provincial governments. We want to change that, but we need your help.
So, will you be part of the one-percent who help us bring this vital coverage to Victoria?
