An online survey about the future of Colwood’s Ocean Boulevard is asking whether the scenic roadway by Esquimalt Lagoon should be closed.

The decision to gauge public opinion grew out of the COVID-19 prevention measure of shutting the road to discourage large gatherings, said Colwood Mayor Rob Martin.

Of the more than 500 people who have responded to the survey so far, one-third support closing the road, one-third support a full opening and one-third back the “hybrid” idea of things such as periodic closures, Martin said.

Among those in support of keeping the road open are people who live in the area and work in Victoria, and make the “purposeful choice” to go over to Ocean Boulevard on the drive home, Martin said.

“They choose to go down Ocean Boulevard because that’s an opportunity for them to unwind before they arrive at home,” he said. “I completely understand that approach, as well.”

Others consider the boulevard to be an important traffic outlet as density increases. Roadwork is currently blocking access via the north end of the peninsula.

To take part in the survey, which closes June 15, go to letstalkcolwood.ca/oceanboulevard.

Great idea. Let’s all close our local parks to vehicles, shutter parking lots and restrict access.

I choose to go through Mt. Doug as its a much nicer drive than taking McKenzie. Some differences of course, but same reason for the choice. Close Mt. Doug!

Saw this coming as soon as they put up the barriers so they could "pave" the road. All they've done is some spot patching. To close the road to vehicles would be a total win for the neighbourhood residents and a terrific real estate marketing tool for the yet unbuilt condo projects. "Your own private beach!" I don't have a problem with the barrier in the middle. It would cease the commuter traffic and slow things down overall. If you want to drive to the Lagoon you'd just have to decide which half you wanted to go to and approach it accordly.

The City of Colwood is showing off some preliminary design concepts for its multi-use pathway along Lagoon Beach.

It’s a 10-year project that will see a nearly four kilometer long, four metre wide pathway built from the Royal Bay Development area to the bridge at the mouth of Esquimalt Lagoon.

The two concepts being proposed for the pathway include a viewing dock that would be built out into the lagoon. The second idea is a bridge that would span across the lagoon that would allow for better access to Colwood’s Pithouse Park and Royal Roads University.

The mayor sure sounds excited about all the new construction. But isn't the entire lagoon and boulevard protected as a migratory bird sanctuary? Apparently that access is "at the discretion of the landowner and the land manager", whoever they are: https://www.canada.c...alt-lagoon.html

"The map shows the boundaries of the refuge, which enclose Esquimalt Lagoon and all nearby banks":

Just leave it the way it is. They are creating a problem that doesn't exist.

Haro Strait at Esquimalt Lagoon?

that does indeed seem to be pushing the definition/boundary.

but no worse than say your boat ramp in saanich somewhere.

But people launch boats using my mystery boat ramp, though. It just might be the only beach access at the end of a road without bollards in Saanich (or at least it always was that way, I don't know its status at this very moment). Maybe there are a couple of other such areas, but I don't know.

You can see boats that were presubably launched here. It's so common Streetview captured boats twice:

For crying out loud.  The appeal of the place is the rural rustic feel.  We don't need fancy angled parking areas, one way traffic (that really hampers access and pushes more traffic up to the residential roads).  There's absolutely nothing wrong with pulling up to a spot in the gravel parking area and just enjoying the natural feel of it without boardwalks and attractions.

I'm usually out there 2-4 times a week to enjoy it before they ruin it.

Yet another example of how the things we enjoy being taken away from us.  I'm tired of it, I have enough people micromanaging how I get to enjoy life as it is.  If you want paved parking and bridges and a touristy feel, go elsewhere.  FFS.

Trail connections to Royal Roads and Royal Bay would be great additions.

This is how I feel about much of Victoria. For sixty years I've been enjoying many things that bloody council seem to think need changing.

60 years ago, people complained about other things changing. You folks sound like you're just complaining about change.

How about we just stop mucking with things that don't need to be mucked with and have been enjoyed for decades in their current form?

Suddenly somehow what has made a place appealing for decades is no longer appealing and needs to be changed?  I don't think so.

I feel ya, Seb.

This region has seen more change since 2014 than people see in entire lifetimes.

This seems like a good change though? I’ve often run/walked along Ocean Blvd, and at least for running it’s been a steady pattern of looking over my shoulder every 10m to make sure I was safe. A dedicated path would make this walk/run more more enjoyable. And to have it go all the way to Royal Bay? Even better!
