Banning STRs outright isn't a good solution. There is a market need for them, particularly larger units that will support families - there are very few suite/2 bedroom+ hotel rooms here, and even less of those are remotely affordable for a family visiting; this is true in most cities. STRs fill that gap nicely.

The solution is more housing. To allow STR and market rent housing to exist without putting significant pressure on vacancies or rates for either.

And this seems to be precisely what this project will bring.

Over 600,000 international students studying in Canada are a more profound challenge for housing than are STRs.

A Victoria restauranteur says he’s got big shoes to fill as he expands his diner chain to Brentwood Bay, opening his fourth location at the former Sassy’s Restaurant.

“It’s going to be a new Floyd’s,” Petr Prusa, the chain’s owner and founder, said in an interview with CHEK News.

And, of course, if it isn’t painted pink, it’s not a Floyd’s.

As reno crews keep busy, Prusa says passersby may now notice the pop of colour called ‘Heartbreak Pink’ when commuting West Saanich Road.

“Right now, they’re doing a bunch of work in the kitchen and just some light housekeeping in the front and getting things sort of ‘Floydalized,’ I guess is the word,” he said with a laugh.

Prusa says the new Floyd’s should open by November if everything goes to plan.

The shocking pink is a dead giveaway: Floyd’s Diner is coming to Brentwood Bay.

Petr Prusa, who owns and operates three of the breakfast-and-lunch restaurants in the capital region — all of them painted bright pink — will open a fourth in early November in the former Sassy’s Restaurant on the high-profile corner of West Saanich Road, Keating X Road and Benvenuto Avenue.

The pink “is kind of our identity,” Prusa said Wednesday. “One customer asked me if it has anything to do with Pink Floyd, but no it doesn’t.”

It was the colour of Prusa’s first Floyd’s downtown. The pink — along with nostalgic murals of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis or Charlie Chaplin — just seemed to stick. Prusa also has Floyd’s Diners in Royal Oak, James Bay and Langford.

Prusa said he signed a five-year lease with the land owner for the 110-seat restaurant in Brentwood, though redevelopment plans for the site are being considered.

The most recent proposal to Central Saanich council includes a mix of apartments, short-term rentals, food and retail for the site.

If redevelopment plans proceed, there are options in the lease to continue operating as initial phases are built, Prusa said.
