Smart money is in acquiring broken, obsolete and incomplete firearms in advance of the Fed buy-back program.

I'm pretty left/liberal in outlook, but this makes me see red!  I actually have a PAL, but don't keep firearms, as I don't really have the time/money to devote to that hobby.  However, I'm really tempted to go out and acquire a soon-to-be-iilegal firearm, and bury it in my backyard, just so I can wave a middle finger at the government!

Legal guns are very rarely a problem in Canada, and yet gun owners are being made scapegoats for all sorts of activities that they would unanimously condemn.  Does anyone honestly think that the ongoing shooting spree of people connected with the drug trade in the Lower Mainland is in any way connected with, or perpetrated by, legal gun owners?

I feel similar to North Shore. I am not a gun guy, but I feel like all this attention to the further crackdown on legal gun owners doesn't serve to reduce actual gun crime in Canada.

If legally owned guns in Canada are not being used in crimes here, and legally owned guns aren't the source of guns used in organized crime in Canada, why is the federal government wasting time on hassling legally owned gun owners? Shouldn't we be putting more attention on cutting off the sources of illegal weapons and bolstering laws around illegal weapons first?

I'm fully in favor of reducing gun crime in this country, but this feels more like theatre than actual crime prevention.

Especially at a cost of $300M. We can't get enough vaccine to vaccinate everyone nor can we take care of the homeless yet we can waste $300M solving a problem that doesn't exist. 

Maybe the Feds think that when they raise HST to 15% and increase income taxes by 20% to pay for their defrauded programs folks will "be up in arms"

Don't forget the actual cost of the long gun registry.  The $300M will just be the tip of the iceberg.

Because its low hanging fruit and easy to enforce, caters to the urban ndp voter and doesnt alienate most of their left wing urban base. 

Whats truly egregious is they and the NDP voted against a recent motion to toughen the penalties for people who smuggle guns into Canada

The Trudeau government is moving to repeal mandatory minimum penalties for drug offences and some gun-related crimes, saying they do not make Canadians safer and unfairly affect Indigenous and Black offenders.

So, punish law abiding citizens, but let the actual gun using criminals get off easier?  What?

I wouldn't be surprised if eventually they start going after people who have never owned firearms in their lives. One day we'll find out our non-ownership of guns wasn't sensitive enough, or our distaste for guns was based on the wrong motivations, or our intolerance for guns was unfairly guilting career criminals, etc.

Well we all know how well the "get soft on crime" approach has worked in downtown Victoria. We have our own police chief telling people it is not safe to use parks in the city while council wants to reduce spending on safety even more.

Purely political theatre that will convince the uneducated masses that Trudeau was "tough on crime" when it actually did nothing.

Most non-gun owners have no idea of the hurdles you have to go through to go target shooting with a pistol.
