From ratemyprofessor

This is my second class with Grace and she is a solid prof & fair marker, but she just left after winning an NDP seat. I understand her choice, but she never even sent out a formal email to the class about this and just left with 3 weeks left in the course. Also, she never critiqued the NDP party (like at all) in a class about Canadian poli.

Don't think so. Someone on twitter mentioned that she was spotted correcting pronouns in Government publications recently.

For those of you who thought I was being funny.

More good news today! 600 instances of gendered language across 15 ministries' regulations have been updated to ensure equal access to government services, no matter their sexual orientation, gender identity, race or cultural beliefs.

I think the pandemic has meant that politicians can't meet or discuss anything with stakeholders or constituents and have to spend their time sitting at home. Good example is the CoV where not much has happened in the past year!

What should she be doing that other MLAs are doing? (Not trying to be glib, just actually curious)

  • As a Representative of his or her constituency, a Member may voice concerns on behalf of constituents, represent viewpoints or intercede and assist in problem solving.
  • Constituents encountering problems within their division, or having problems dealing with government departments, agencies, etc. often refer to their MLA for assistance.
  • Much of an MLA's time is spent handling their constituents’ individual problems, answering questions and concerns, and keeping aware of the prevailing opinion of the constituency.
  • MLAs keep in touch with their constituents by personal contact, by phone, in writing, through meetings, and by the two annual household mailings they are entitled to send.

Crickets from Ms Lore as far as this constituent is concerned.

Have you contacted her office?

Thanks, I'm aware of what MLAs do. I was more questioning if Mrs. Lore is not fulfilling obligations that other MLAs are.

The response (or lack thereof) in my dealings with her predecessor has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding dealing with "my" MLA.

There is a major social problem in Victoria, and both the federal and provincial politicians refuse to acknowledge it on their Twitter accounts, which they use to discuss all of their pursuits. This leads observers to believe they are not interested in what is happening in their communities, on the ground.

Right, but I just don't understand why this thread is called "Where is Grace Lore". What part of her job has she not been doing? I contacted her office in early February regarding a matter and heard back the next day.

I suspect it's related to their silence on one of the biggest social problems, ever, in the community they have been elected to preside over.

To the best of my knowledge, MS. Lore hasn't had any meetings (virtual or otherwise), events or discussions so all I have to go by is what she communicates through social media. All I have seen through social media are retweets and comments on social justice issues which appear to broadly aligned with her research and teaching in that area. I haven't seen any engagement efforts or communications to her constituents at all. In fairness, maybe the Premier's office restricts that for new MLAs to make sure they don't go off-message.

Glad to hear that her staff solved a problem for you, I think that is a different scenario however.

A Hansard search for her name shows she hasn't spoken a word in the Legislature in the first two weeks of this spring session.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

Well let’s hold on here, I’m not sure describing people like that is helpful. She just isn’t focused on the big issue taking place in Victoria, and we’re not clear why that is, whether that’s because she’s being kept from participating or whether she’s choosing not to.

Let's be clear here. Grace is not the Minister of Housing nor Mental Health and Addictions. Shutting down these encampments was not in her mandate.

The government and Horgan are well aware this is a big issue. I mean Horgan did pull ICBC off Eby's plate so he could focus on the homeless task. Not to diminish the work that is in Lore's mandate letter but as a rookie MLA there is not a whole lot of risk with her mishandling the 'gender equity' file.

And yes from a regional representation perspective she has a responsibility to voice the concerns of her constituents but that seems a bit redundant at this point. Sure she can type up a letter explaining how residents want their parks back but all Eby needs to do is pick up the front page of the newspaper here, in Vancouver, or across the Province for that matter. I'd rather the heat for this gets fully directed at Eby as that is where the change can occur. All Grace can provide on this file is a bit of lip-service (which doesn't appear to be happening).

Victoria has concerns beyond homelessness. What about tourism, what about small business, what about recovery? Seen her at any of the SIPP events, Mayor's economic task force meetings, supporting the restaurant association, tourism operators or bus companies on any of their issues they are raising to the Provincial Government?

My personal opinion is that she was a last minute addition to the ticket when the party decided they didn't want Stephanie Papik getting a seat. I am not sure that Ms. Lore really knew what was involved in doing the job or was that interested in it. If the ratemyprof report is correct, it looked like the whole thing was last minute.
