The only thing that I have ever paid attention to has been the fireworks.

If there are not enough things to draw people downtown (that supports Victoria business) i then I do not feel the fireworks are worth the cost.

Do we have any figures on the percent of people that watch the fireworks that do not live in the city of Victoria?

With the amount of wingnut nonsense the current council throws money at, leave the fireworks as is.

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority is taking its first steps to remove an empty pedestal on the Inner Harbour Causeway that used to support a Capt. James Cook statue, torn down and thrown into the ocean during Canada Day protests last year.

The fibreglass statue was broken into pieces when a group slipped a rope around its neck on July 1, 2021, and pulled it down, tossing it into the Inner Harbour and leaving half of one leg and a foot atop a pedestal smeared with red handprints.

It cannot be repaired and the harbour authority does not intend to replace it, said CEO Ian Robertson. Instead, they will remove the pedestal and two accompanying plaques while working with the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations to determine what should stand in its place.

Why are non "first nations" citizens being excluded from this consultation? Last I checked, I pay taxes that fund the harbour authority and as such I should have the opportunity to be a part of these discussions. Reverse racism, is still racism.

How about just a Fireworks Day not attached to any holiday?

I think that in general Mayor Helps opposes anything that makes people happy!

You pay taxes and you are not being consulted on Canada Day prep. Apparently the FN are the only people that count there as well.

The Harbour authority has a first nations agreement part of which is reflected in this statement.

In January 2019, with the support of the Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation, we announced our participation in the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business’ Progressive Aboriginal Relations (PAR) Program. PAR is a bench-marking tool that helps businesses measure its work in Indigenous relations. As they say, “what gets measured, gets done,” and so over the last three years we closely monitored and tracked our efforts in the four program pillars: Indigenous employment, business development, community relations, and leadership.

We are proud to announce that we have been certified silver in the PAR Program, signaling our meaningful commitment to the Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation on whose lands we work, live, learn, and play.

I simply provided information about the partnership between the harbour authority and the partnership they indicate on their website. This is one reason as to why the harbour authority would consult the the local first nations on this issue.

Why can’t people work together . All  people indigenous and non indigenous who want a voice on Canada day celebrations  all sit at the same table and work on a plan including everyone.

Seems to me by the exclusion of interested Canadians regardless of race you are driving more of a wedge between races . This is a celebration of our country whether you are a new Canadian or your family has been here for decades. This is a celebration of your country .Canada hasn’t always done things right as a nation but we haven’t always done wrong either . By having everyone at the same table  equal it makes our city stronger  . This is of course unless the city is trying to push the race card  punish all non First Nation people.

COV has no desire to have everyone at the same table working together I have to ask  myself why .

The mayor thinks the housing you live in is racist. And when it was pointed out her research was flawed, she doubled down. I don’t think there is much sympathy for a middle ground.
