I thought I saw Soupa Cafe signage on that building recently.

Pretty much a design from 1972 with 2 extra floors added. I suppose it will be entirely functional if not especially beautiful. Better than the east facade of HP2/Hudson House though.

Six-storey rental building proposed for former Esquimalt bingo hall site

A proposed 135-unit rental project for the site is headed to public hearing, and will include two live-work units

Its certainly an improvement over what's there now but I was hoping for something a bit more inspiring, a bit less 1982 or thereabouts, and ideally taller......

Well then you should have written council back in September, or between then and now. 🥸

Submitted architectural drawings show the building would have six three-bedroom units, 71 two-bedroom units, and 135 one-bedroom or studio units.

A two-storey underground parkade accessible from Old Esquimalt Road will have 206 bicycle parking spaces and 136 vehicle parking spaces.

Esquimalt Bingo Hall was shut down by the gaming conglomerate Great Canadian Gaming in March of 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The building was purchased by Denciti Development in 2021, and is currently being used as a commissary kitchen by a number of food businesses.

Esquimalt council voted unanimously Monday to approve the rezoning of the old Esquimalt Bingo Hall property and two adjacent single-family lots for a six-storey rental building of 135 units.

The developer, Vancouver-based Denciti Development Corp., is hoping to complete the building in 2025, which will help ease the housing shortage in the township, which doesn’t have enough housing for personnel from CFB Esquimalt.

Some nearby residents opposed the project, mostly on the basis of its height, building shadows, and traffic impact on Old Esquimalt from having the underground parkade entrance there.

Esquimalt resident Tim Scheaff sent in a petition to council with just over a dozen nearby residents asking for the 136-car parkade entrance to be located on Esquimalt Road rather than Old Esquimalt Road.
