That's insane. We were there this afternoon but knew nothing about it. It's the big spot prawn festival today and hundreds of people are on the dock buying seafood straight off the boats. I saw a sea lion poking his head out but never dreamed something like this would happen. Toldja so, is what the GVHA is gonna say now.

In fairness, let's not get sea lions mixed up with seals.  VERY different breed.  They might be MILLIONS of years apart on the evolution scale.

My favourite quote from the article:

Andrew Trites, the director of UBC's Marine Mammal Research Unit, does not blame the animal for its behaviour in the video. "My first reaction to the video is just how stupid some people can be to not treat wildlife with proper respect," he said. "This was a male California sea lion. They are huge animals. They are not circus performers. They're not trained to be next to people." [He doesn't add: and they really don't need to eat your leftover bread.]

^ Exactly. Your leftover children that are dressed as white as Wonder Bread™, well, they are fair game.

Never turn your back on the ocean.  Or a sea lion being fed crumbs of bread and wanting more.

Realize that people are walking that dock carrying three pound bags of prawns, along with live sea urchins and other delicacies. Funny, all the shops in Steveton have a sign in the window saying don't bring your prawns or fish inside. But it was quite a nice little festival. I don't know if Victoria has something similar. Maybe we should. Minus the man-eating sea monsters.

The sea lion was gentle actually. It had great accuracy and grabbed the girl by the dress. It also let go right away. There is no doubt it had little interest in eating or hurting the the girl. Lucky her. I was also impressed with grandpas quick reaction! He was in that water instantly. Hero big time!

Jesus. We posted the video link to VV's Facebook page ...and we learned that some people don't understand that we have no control over the title someone gives to their YouTube video.

Sigh.

Know it all.

In fairness, let's not get sea lions mixed up with seals.  VERY different breed.  They might be MILLIONS of years apart on the evolution scale.

A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 8 ft (2.4 m) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 6 ft (1.8 m) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 10 ft (3.0 m) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_lion

Harbor seals are brown, silvery white, tan, or gray, with distinctive V-shaped nostrils. An adult can attain a length of 1.85 meters (6.1 ft) and a mass of 132 kilograms (290 lb) https://en.wikipedia...iki/Harbor_seal

But all us sea creatures look alike to you people .

What a crazy coincidence. The only sea lion in the history of the world that has never killed anything is also the sea lion that gets caught on video dragging a kid off a pier.

That sea lion should be easy to track down as their whisker pattern is somewhat similar to having fingerprints, but could it could have been wearing a disguise.

On the news last night a marine biologist was urging the family to contact the Vancouver Aquarium if the little girl had suffered any gashes from the sea lion's mouth. I think they are more able to advise on any possible unusual infections than a regular doctor. The grandpa was a hero!
