How many of the jaywalkers need to get into that block between Bay and Hillside? What businesses are in that area they want to get to other than Tim Hortons? The Times Colonist, CHEK or the CBC? The liquor store and Wendy’s are both in malls at the ends of the blocks, so how many extra steps are required to go to the existing crosswalks? It’s 140 metres to the south and 205 metres to the north. They are saving maybe a couple of hundred steps.

i actually suspect you can’t very accurately time a crosswalk signal here with the bay and hillside traffic lights. let’s say it activates 10 seconds after a bay st. red. 5 second lag until walk signal. 7 seconds of walk signal. 20 seconds to cross. 10 more seconds lag. you are getting close to a minute. currently do both bay and hillside hold at red simultaneously for a minute or more?

Hopefully if someone buys the old theatre/current office they’ll more tastefully deal with this walkway in conjunction with Yates on Yates.

Hopefully if someone buys the old theatre/current office they’ll more tastefully deal with this walkway in conjunction with Yates on Yates.

Once Vivid and Yates are both complete, there is going to be a gated mid block walkway to be maintained by the two new buildings. Open during the day and closed after 10 PM... according to the disclosure statement anyway. I believe the townhouse components of the development are going to open to/face this walkway.

So is public access blocked all the time, or only during specific hours? The sign is a little ominous.

I think it's just a temp thing for construction purposes maybe? The Yates side of the development is at ground level now and I'm guessing they are soon going to start working on removing that ugly rock fence. That would turn that corridor into a construction zone that they probably want locked up during off hours. Not 100% sure though.

The quality of the fence/gate and the keypad suggest something more long-term than just the construction phase of Y-o-Y & Vivid.

It appears to be a permanent installation.

The question now is whether that walkway was a public amenity or whether it was merely an access point for employees of that building, who enter and exit via an entrance in the middle of the block.

I walk by ever morning, surprised they didn't fence off the front and back entirely.

The gate will be closed once VicFD inspects it and certifies it as to-code.

It’s too bad. I use that walkway all the time.

A straightened out metal coat hanger with a hook on the end will grab that 'push to open' paddle nicely. That's a pretty silly security flaw for such an expensive gate.

The visual deterrent will probably be enough for most people. Perhaps security cameras will also be installed.

The city says this is a key pedestrian connection. I suspect this was done without city permission. I will find out. This is not okay. Is this a Jawl building?
