The owners of this $28 South Surrey mansion would pay $5 in school taxes under the NDP’s new proposal.

https://www.maplerid...rotest-planned/

The increased school tax would increase taxes paid on a $4 million property by $800,000 but an inability to pay does not mean homeowners are immediately kicked out of their homes.

School taxes can be deferred by those over 55, surviving spouses and people with disabilities.

But Cummings said that using your home “as a bank machine” is “not something that most sensible people do not do, it’s a bad thing.”

Thanks for all the clarity, Black Press.

Whoops, somebody multiplied by 0.2 instead of 0.002!

Yeah. Is it a big deal to defer 8k in taxes per year when the place is worth multiple millions? Not really...

But if you click on the "Ticket sales low" link you are directed to a re-written article saying "limited tickets available". See:

Yes, the cached version cannot be found. But I read it yesterday. Somebody got a spanking for writing and publishing yesterday’s article.

It went from “low sales” to “booming” in the span of about I’d say an angry phone call.

Here is an example of why it's a very bad idea to let your advertiser write whatever they want in your paper, in a style that posing as a (really bad) article:

https://www.nanaimob...non-compliance/

That's why people will not want to come back to your paper and start reading stuff.

Here's cached version quoting "officials":

Officials are hoping ticket sales will pick up before this weekend’s HSBC Women’s Rugby Sevens Series event in Langford with lots of tickets still for sale.

https://webcache.goo...n&ct=clnk&gl=ca

I don't think there's anything nefarious going on necessarily. Black News is not listed as an official sponsor but those sponsors do advertise. Black Press are being good neighbours and business boosters by downplaying the low ticket sales. If headlines say ticket sales are low, people will think it's a lame event and will stay away. There is power in a headline.

I think it's a tough call sometimes. A paper wants to be a good citizen and promote fun events but if things turn sour (like IFCON 2015) they also have an obligation to report honestly without fear or favour.

I’m not thinking anything nefarious happened. Just something odd.

I'm thinking an official was asked by the reporter how things are going and he said, "fine, although ticket sales could be better" not realizing that was going to be tomorrow's headline.

When I read the original article I thought to myself, “no official will be happy with this”. Looks like I was right. It’s just the nature and severity of the 180 is interesting.

^You were expecting a more moderate headline like, "Ticket Sales About What You'd Expect At This Time".

When the vast majority of readers in print and online - of any mass market general publication - only read the headline, I would not have expected it to be the subject at all.

VIDEO: Canada’s women kick off sevens tournament with tough loss to Australia

Big turnout at Westhills Stadium for the series

Anyway... despite the sub-headline, they make no mention of crowd size in the article.  It looks like it's a tad over half full.

That didn't take long. Two weeks into Black Press taking over the printing of the Times-Colonist there is a full page mistake in today's Sunday paper.

The editorial page is the same page as was published on Friday, including Friday's date.

Wow, that's crazy. I guess it probably wasn't a computer error, more likely the trained monkeys operating the press forgot to remove one of the previous day's aluminum printing plates before putting the new ones on.

that's why a pressman pulls random copies off the line and "reads" them, to make sure the pages are in order, no ads are upside down, no big ink run/streak etc.
