Picked up some Shasta today, 2.5L for $1.00.
And get this, no bottle deposit!
Didn't notice that before. Woot!Consider that across the street and up the street, a 355ml can probably costs $1.29 plus deposit at 7-11 or Mac's. Now, the key here is to see if the Bottle Depot will take the return and refund cash. If they give me 30 cents back, we're down to 70 cents. I remember as a kid (19-23 years old) one of the fun things was to try to mix in pop cans with your beer can returns, as beer cans had a 10 cent value, pop cans only 5 cents. If you were lucky, you could score an extra 50 cents on a good day. That could buy you half a new can of beer.

Do they have other flavours? I used to drink and love Shasta as a kid. If they have their black cherry I am getting up going in like ten minutes.

Ya, they have some other flavours, not sure what.
Ya, its legit Shasta, "since 1889". shastapop.com on the label. Made in Hayward, California.
The whole bottle has all your vitamin C needed for the day (10% per 250ml cup). 900 calories per bottle.

I mock the dollar stores for allegedly selling poisonous counterfeits made by Chinese child labour but actually it appears they sell a lot of stuff made by American companies that are either too small or not nimble enough to get in the door of the mega chain box stores or powerful enough to get shelf space besides the Tides and Coca-Colas of normal retailing, Shasta being a good example.

Banks are bracing for an upcoming influx of pennies from the various charities that want to have one last kick before they disappear. And even though it costs 1.6 cent to make a new one, it probably wasn't necessary to make millions more.

The Shasta stock seemed pretty depleted. They only have gingerale, lemon-lime, diet cola and orange.

I concur. But the orange has a great old-fashioned taste (and I don't mean that in an old stock kind of way).

Yes, G-Man, I too was devastated to learn the rumours of black cherry Shasta were but a mirage. I compromised and took home a massive 2.5 litre torpedo of ginger ale. Sure enough, checking my receipt showed no evidence of either deposit or eco-fee, just HST on the dollar purchase.
I hefted it home and proceeded to make up some rye and gingers for myself and Mrs. West. Upon learning her beverage originated from the downtown dollar store she almost spit it out, claiming it was probably brewed from Malaysian tap water. I assured her it was from California and she was temporarily mollified.
Now the ethical question of what to do with the bottle. Since I paid no deposit I am not entitled to a refund and should therefore put the bottle in the recycling bin. Or do I cash it in for 20 cents on the basis that I am claiming the abandoned deposits of other containers that ended up in the landfill?

Are you saying the company that collects your blue box bottles doesn't turn in for refund the items that have deposits applied to them?
