Ok, another "liquor primary" question: Hermann's Jazz Club on View St. -- food primary or liquor primary license, what say you? I can tell you that kids are allowed and welcome there, any night, every night. I used to think it was a bar-only place that didn't allow minors, but was told otherwise by a grandmother who regularly takes her pre-teen & teen-age grand-kids there. So I checked, and yup, kids are fine, provided they like nightclubs and live music. They can stay as long as they want.

Food-primary. Kids can stay as long as they want in food-primary. My example of kids leaving early was Seattle. No such thing here.

So it almost sounds like food-primary is a total advantage to owners. If I go to Hermann's, I just have a drink -- I never eat there. Most people there are just having drinks, although you can order food if you want (most don't). Last time I was there, I saw 3 people eating, out of maybe 40. The rest were just drinking.

Now, at the same time, that locale reaps the benefit of being able to cater to all people, including parents who want to bring their kids.

What's the advantage, then, of having a liquor-primary license?

^ I would assume that it is that you don't need seats for everyone and you don't need to have a full kitchen. i.e. a disco. No one mills about in the aisles in a restaurant (typically).

I agree with zoomer. Reducing the nightclub seats in town is the wrong reaction. Stiff fines and jail time to yahoos is the right reaction. Not punishing the 99% of people who are just out to have fun.

I think you can still walk into Swans with your kids and through the bar with them anytime, to get to the "sidewalk seating", where the late and very crafty Mr. Williams managed to turn it into indoor seating, yet sort of on the existing sidewalk, yet warm and indoors-y and kind of heritage-looking to match existing. I think the flowers must be what makes this all possible. Smart man.

Hermanns - I thought kids had to split at 7 pm but I must be mistaken.

Some cities actively promote and create an evening entertainment district...not Victoria.

Defying everything that Victoria is (and will be) is one of officialdom's most popular pastimes.

It bugs me that downtown Victoria is still regarded as an unfortunate side effect of city life. A nuisance, a burden, etc.

The city is focused on reducing nightclub seating in the downtown core and this proposal assists their efforts in doing so.

So where exactly do they want the nightclub seating to be if not downtown? Is this yet another example of the "take it out to Langford" complex?

Agreed.

That aside, what is more profitable: food sales or liquor sales?

This passed tonight, so they get their wine bar license.

I spoke to Council and asked if this license also came with a cold beer and wine store allowance and the answer was yes, which surprised me.

Ya, that was in the 35-page application and information.

That punchline was worth the year-long wait.

For anyone who missed the outcome on our get together thread - Canoe definitely allows kids in their restaurant side. Their pub side, is adults only. The two spaces are very separate. Anything to the contrary was speculation and rumour. Neither the City nor Canoe hates babies... Gman.

Canoe has been getting a bad wrap for it's food over the last while but word is the chef from Devour (closed last year and now replaced by Foo Ramen Bar) will be heading up the restaurant now. Devour was very positively reviewed.

Hope this happens. Loved Devour and really enjoy going to Canoe, although it's usually just for drinks due to mediocre food.

A group of us went for brunch to Canoe a few weeks ago and when I ordered I specifically asked if I could have bread with my order. Certainly. When my order came there was no bread so I mentioned I had ordered bread. It's coming. I finished my lunch and never received my bread.

Not a huge thing, correct? The thing that got me was when I was asked how things were (after we finished our brunch), I mentioned I did not receive my bread. The answer was something about it being free so no big problem (??).

Going back would be something quite low on my priorities.

I haven't been there in a few months but I've never had a problem with the food there. Now that it's patio season, I'll see for myself if there has been a change in quality.

Just dined on the patio last evening with Mrs.Mike. She really enjoys the vegetarian burger. My burger with the works was good. Accompanying salad nice. Fries decent. Beer good. Adds up to, I'll be back.

You can't beat that outdoor deck on a sunny evening. And I let my imagination run ahead, envisioning what it will be like with the new bridge, a completed and lived in Janion, and the new David Foster way right past Canoe. Seriously? We live here!

Don't be so sure.

Glad to hear the food is getting better. Sounds like the chef from Devour is running the show now.

I agree, it's one of the most amazing spots for waterfront dining. We're so fortunate indeed :)
