^ In this case it doesn't sound like the managers are complaining (they are not unionized presumably). It sounds like the staff are complaining that managers are doing their job.

Listening to the union rep this morning, he says the staff turnover is incredible.

I took a look at their contract this morning.  Did we know that it expires tomorrow?  They are wasting no time getting into a strike position.

http://www.bcbargain...013 to 2016.pdf   <  contract, go to page 94 for wage scales.

Seems to me that those wages are pretty good for hospitality workers in Victoria. 2%-2.25% wage increases over the past few years have also been better than many organizations have offered. Of course wages don't address workload but I would be surprised to hear that there were a shortage of people willing to work for those wages.

The union is probably most effective in this business with a flash strike.

Okay, pathetic and devious.

I have had the pleasure to eat at some of the most remarkable restaurants in the world and you know what, management often drops by the table and tops up my water or coffee or asks if I want another drink. It is called outstanding customer service and most reasonably wait staff would realize that by management elevating the customer experience there will be bigger tips and more repeat business.

100%.

And at times you'll even see an owner come along and clear a table if a place is slammed.

Once rules and regulations get in the way of reasonable service and customer attentiveness, things start to fall apart. If you've got a waitress standing around because she is not responsible for welcoming a guest who's been standing at the door for the last five minutes, that's a problem.

There will be a big tip if Mr. Bosa clears my table

Anybody know what the bus station looks like now?  You think he'll just raze the thing soon?

Are the managers helping out the cleaning staff who supposedly have not had a day off for 60 days?

There's nothing like having the owner clean your toilet.

Hey, at $20.50 an hour and all that overtime, they are doing alright!  Plus a whole bunch will be laid off come fall.

Wouldn't blame them for missing a few spots.

Owners deserve a big part of the credit why not part of the tip?

... in some cultures a tip can be an insult.

Or it could be indicative of difficulty finding enough qualified, motivated workers... [emphasis added]

Business that offer better wage and benefit packages have no difficulty finding and motivating workers. Pay them more, treat them better and you will motivate them to be productive AND loyal. A simple truth that seems to have fallen out of fashion in business schools in the past few decades.

The Empress pays the best wages in the City though, they have the golden collective agreement.  No idea how bad the working conditions are though.

  1. I would be willing to bet that is factually incorrect. Now, if you are speaking of only hotels, that I might believe.
  2. So what? If people will not work for the wages they are offering they can offer more and/or offer better benefits and conditions of employment. That sir, is the capitalism you seem to preach yet apparently are unwilling to apply to workers selling their labour.

This fantasy of not being able to find workers is simply an excuse to bring in slave labour... indentured servants ... sorry, temporary foreign workers.

I think some of today's workers lack the work ethic of a few decades ago when hotel work was more seasonal and you had to make the best of it during the peak season even if it meant long hours because you knew your hours would be cut back in the fall or be laid off. The younger whining generation of today want all the benefits NOW without having paid their dues. Workers have to work longer hours because their co-workers can't "cut the mustard" so they phone in sick or quit after a weeks work 'cause the beach is there and the surf is up.

I happened to like the look of the WHOLE renovation project that has happened and is still ongoing. Victorians are fortunate to have an owner with fairly deep pockets take over the most prestigious hotel in the city and give it a new face. So who misses the hedge on Beleville Street, the ivy that was eroding the bricks, the moth-eaten tiger skin in a tired old Bengal Lounge, or about to miss the dilapidated bus terminal?

Hat's off to Mr. Bosa for making Victoria better.
