Soccer and football fans in the region could soon be converging on the West Shore.

Plans for a $15-million sports centre in Langford will be announced at a press conference today. City Centre Park will include two all-weather-turf playing fields, with the main stadium for soccer and football to feature a permanent 2,000-seat grandstand that would include dressing rooms, concessions and luxury boxes. Temporary seating could bring capacity up to 10,000 for big events.

The second turf soccer and football field would include two ball diamonds. Proposed within the complex are a 700-seat hockey, skating and lacrosse arena, 16-lane tenpin bowling alley and 16-hole mini golf.

We definitely need a new 10-pin bowling alley since we don't have one anymore. There was a Mayfair Lanes; why not Langford Lanes? & what's with the 16-hole minigolf!? Couldn't they fit in 2 more?

This is different from the sports complex planned for the Westhills thing, right?

Drove past here the other day and the minigolf is now open. I belive the Playzone is also open. The Splash park is coming along pretty good too, just ran into a snag with VIHA. not sure what but nothing major I'm sure.

Langford park wins innovative-design award

Langford's City Centre Park has won an international award for innovative design.

The International Northwest Parks and Recreation Association has presented the city with its design of the year award, marking the first time a B.C. community has won the award in more than a decade.

In order to make better use of space, the design for the park combines an outdoor waterpark facility with an artificial skating surface. The water park is open and the ice surface is scheduled to open in the winter of 2009.

INPRA was founded in 1946. Its 200 individual and agency members include parks and recreation organizations in Alberta and B.C, and from several U.S. states including Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming.

If you go here there is an article about it and a link to a photo gallery, i dont belive they show the completed skating/splash pool area, but it shows it pretty close to finished, there also pictures of the mini golf right next to it here

I am shocked that Langford won an award for Langford City Centre Park. There should be no awards for turning an ecological wetland (Hull’s Field) into a waterpark and skating rink.
I did not realize that developing over top of a wetland was a better use of space. Langford should be protecting green space, not destroying it.
I acknowledge that developments like Langford City Centre Park will benefit the community, but the loss of Hull’s Field is more detrimental than the gain of this facility.
Was there no other location to put Langford City Centre Park? Probably not, since any land that was available is likely being used for another large residential development or retail space.
Clearly, Langford needs to improve its land use planning.

Ah, yes -- the tuff-toys all-plastic pirate ship, available at Walmart & Costco. No suburban backyard (or new-ish public park) should be without one...
