I'd suggest that tree-lined streets and city symphonies etc. are rather basic trappings of civilization and a community's collective dignity, so I'll never understand why some people want to casually discard such things.

Idk, symphonies are probably racist. Definitely euro-centric and white supremacist.
and tree-lined streets? Your whiteness is on full display my dude. Check it FAST

cancelled for this year.
The symphony has also cancelled its entire summer season of concerts, including performances at Butchart Gardens.

Victoria Symphony Emergency Fund
The Victoria Symphony has been a cultural icon on Vancouver Island for 79 years, surviving many crises, both political and ecological, including World War II. But never have we been under such threat as we are now during this global pandemic, the economic ramifications of which will continue to be profound in the coming months.
Like you, we are saddened that we cannot gather together and allow the healing power of music to lift our hearts and minds at this time. It is our sincere hope that we will be able to do so in the future, but for that we need your help. We have always been able to depend upon the generosity of our audiences and patrons and we need you now more than ever. With your assistance, the Symphony will still be here when the worst has passed and we can once again share the joyous experience of a live concert together.
Won't you please consider a gift to the Victoria Symphony Emergency Fund to help ensure that this worthy institution can return in our post COVID-19 world?

i'm not surprised they cancelled, the splash always brings together a huge crowd of people and realistically that can't happen this year.. i have a feeling all events or festivals that bring any sort of crowd will eventually be cancelled (just looked up the busker festival that won't be happening either)

No Symphony Splash in the Inner Harbour, though. “We hope to bring back the concert on the barge in the future, but the stage we have been using is no longer insurable and we have to figure out how much it will cost to replace it,” said CEO Matthew White. Instead, a 10-day series of concerts will culminate July 31 with a free show on the legislature lawn, headlined by the Steven Page Trio.

Apparently the cancellation was due to a big misunderstanding. The music director's name is Christian Kluxen. A member of the "City Family" overheard calling a musician calling him by his first name and jumped to the conclusion that this was a colonialist group that needed to be immediately cancelled!

After a two-year absence, Splash is back — but it’s moving out of the Inner Harbour.
There is hope the hugely popular Symphony Splash will return, but the stage that has been used is no longer insurable and efforts are being made to figure out the cost of a replacement.
For now, musicians will be performing on solid ground as part of the Splash Around Town: Symphony in the Summer Festival.

The barge they used has been literally falling apart for years now.
It was finally declared too unsafe to use, and that put an end to it all.

They did exactly that a couple of decades ago when the actual Splash was cancelled due to weather.
They set a huge stage up at the West end of Belville Street in front of the Parliament Buildings, and the event was very successful.
They called it the "Dry Symphony Splash".
The Symphony Splash as it has taken place on a barge was always quite an expensive undertaking, costing far more money than it ever made.
The logistics were also onerous, as was the exposure to liability.
This current plan is like an effort to present performances that don't cost as much to stage, and perhaps might even make a profit for the Orchestra.

We even go so far as to direct city funds to garbage like the ACAB mural in Bastion Square.

There is a very strong case to be made that, after over three decades of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra putting on a successful Symphony Splash essentially on their own ... it would be appropriate for the City of Victoria and the Province of British Columbia to step up financially and recognize the Splash as an essential part of the summer "fabric" of Victoria, offering up the appropriate funding and support to ensure that the Symphony Splash continues as the major event that its proven to be.
BUT ... it would take a responsible civic government, and a Provincial Government that actually paid attention to the few city blocks they govern from within to make that happen ... and we all know by now that we actually have neither, so we should expect nothing.

Did you read the article? The symphony will be playing on the leg lawn on July 31. So very similar to the old splash, just on land.
There also a whole range of free concerts of various types of music at the BHB, not all related to the symphony as well as before the symphony on the 31st. I can't imagine they are paying for all that. They must be getting funding from some where.

Certainly!
What (please, be very specific) makes you think I might not have read the article?

From what I understand, the only classical music will be at ticketed events. I'm not really interested in the music being presented on the Legislature lawn. The "dry" splash they had that one year was quite enjoyable so I'm not sure why they can't do that again.
