WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CITIFIED VICTORIA
There's a cute dinosaur appearing all over town and I'm kinda enjoying him. He's always in a blank area that kinda "suits" such art, never really defacing anything, and generally improving what ever it's been painted on. The old Earles building on Blanshard and Fisgard got a huge version of it on the construction site. My favorite appearing so far is inside the inset entrance of the christian book store on Blanshard with a little speech bubble saying "I DID exist..."
I know it's graffiti, but every time I spot a new one I smile. It's not some samey illegible tag, or some depressing or gross art, it's just a cute friendly dinosaur.

That building is on Cook St, at the corner of Cook + Mason. There used to be a tax accountant there, but they've since moved leaving it vacant for a few months now.

Oh yeah, that little building.
That style of graffiti is referred to as a "bomb," btw. Big letters across a larger surface is a "bomb," and small letters on a small space is a "tag."

This little crap-shack is one that I think actually benefits from the graffiti "art". Either tear it down or let the "artists" have at it.

I'd have to agree with you there, np. Unused or derelict buildings that are otherwise just whitewashed and adding nothing to the urban landscape could benefit from allowing talented (key word being talented) artists painting something interesting on their walls.
We have a lot of examples of talented graffiti artists doing incredible things on walls where landlords either hired them to paint something or let them have free reign.
The code of conduct among graffiti artists and "taggers," even, is if someone has painted something respectable on a wall, it's to be left alone until another talented artist, provided enough time has passed, throws up another piece.

Not sure they're following that code. My favourite and fairly detailed dino got covered over with a very uninspired "bomb" style tag at the Romeo's pizza site

I came to Victoria five months ago to study at UVIC and I chose to write my research paper about graffiti because I was really chocked; the tags are everywhere and I wanted to know what do the people here think about it.

I've never really noticed it here in Victoria as a problem, we have pretty much nothing compared to many places I've been.

Rawan, you need to differentiate between "graffiti" and "tags." Graffiti as an art shouldn't be lumped in with scribbles made by bored teenagers.

just to clear my opinion ,yes some of the work is art ,and amazing ,a lot is crap ,done by twit's that need a smack upside the head ,in sannich the law goes after the building owner for clean-up ,not the tagger, in my mind a lazy abuse of hard working business owners .we can have crack downs on seat belts and jay-walking ,but the twits doing damage get away with it time and again..my truck was tagged when I call the cop's telling them I was going to "tag" the kid with a paintball ,I was warned I would be charged with assault with a weapon .crap like this reduces my trust in cop's and municipal government ..there is a big difference in art and tagging

You can't equate the beautiful Wildfire Bakery wall with some idiot scratching his tag into a plate glass window.
