More than 70 events in Greater Victoria — including Rifflandia, TC10KVictoria and the Victoria Film Festival — received upwards of $2.5 million in recovery funding as the province more than doubled its Fairs, Festivals and Events Recovery Fund on Monday.

The fund, which covers up to 20 per cent of the budget for B.C. live-event producers, was upped to nearly $30 million from an initial $12.9 million announced in August. The one-time grants are capped at $250,000, which covers everything from venue rentals to employee wages. The grants will go to nearly 700 event producers in 134 communities.

“It certainly allows us to get started with more confidence, knowing we have that support,” said Victoria’s Nick Blasko, whose Rifflandia festival received $250,000 for its upcoming 12th edition on Sept. 15-18, 2022.

“There are no guarantee as to how the sector does next year — we’re still in recovery mode. But the support across the province is unbelievable.”

^ So if Nick puts on a show he bears financial risk. If he doesn’t put on a show he gets $250K?

I think the idea is that they get this money if they do a show this year.

It seems a bit silly. Shows would probably resume anyway. And Rifflandis has less than 9,000 attendance.

Same as a SoFMC big show.

Oh Lorde.

The New Zealand singer with a bevy of global hits to her name is among the headliners as Rifflandia Festival returns to Victoria’s Royal Athletic Park Sept. 15 to 18, after an absence of four years. This year’s lineup also includes Charli XCX, Lauv, Cypress Hill, Ben Harper and Cat Power. Perhaps the most unusual and biggest get in the literal sense of the word is veritable sporting legend, four-time National Basketball Association champion Shaquille O’Neal, who is performing under the moniker DJ Diesel.

There's some pretty horrific noises coming from one of the Rifflandia stages right now.

Isn't it all horrific noise? Yeah, I'm proud to wear my Karen badge.

I'm surprised I can't hear it but I have in years past. And I'm way farther away then you.

I spoke too soon. I can hear it now. My condolences for those of you much closer who have obviously no choice to be assaulted by that.

I'm guessing at least Mike in Sooke and Matt on SSI can't hear it.

Fortunately, the racket (not Brahms 3rd Racket mind you) didn't last all that long.

I’d be there in a second if I wasn’t getting ready for a trip.

Pussy Riot played tonight, and Ben Harper and many more. I was in Victoria today shopping and drove around the locations a couple times. Looked like a great setup. Next year!

Did those thousands of people have to wear masks as I will have to do upon arrival at YYJ on Sunday. Surely with so many people gathered so close together in a relatively small area like RAP our governments should be doing all they can to keep them safe.

Royal Athletic Park was full of concertgoers for the first time in four years Friday, the second day of the annual Rifflandia music festival.

The event, in operation for the first time since 2018, seemed to thrill audiences with its mix of hip-hop, indie rock and roots music from across North America.

Friday featured sets by Bran Van 3000, Cat Power, and Bikini Kill.

“I’m so glad it’s back,” said Tim Gower, 24, a University of Victoria student who attended the festival when he was a teenager.

“It’s crazy how much I missed this.”

Why is this not held in the stadium right down the street? Sure have your music fest but why is this in a park that people for miles around have no choice to be a part of? People in this town freak out over a few minutes of fireworks (the dogs, the dogs) after a few of the ball games in the same place. But 3 days of sonic assault is ok?

While I'd hardly call myself a fan of Rifflandia, for the most part, the aural assault ends by bedtime.

In the arena?  It's not a music festival if it's in an arena.  Especially one as bland as ours.

The park has had concerts going back decades.  I saw the Beach Boys there in the 80's.  Colin James.  Maybe Brian Adams.

At the moment, I am enjoying my very quiet neighbourhood with the occasional squawks of seagulls and a bit of traffic. I want that 24/7. I want to choose if I listen to music and what music I listen to.

I get that this a huge important musical event that many people enjoy and want to attend. Heck there were even posts on the Oak Bay FB selling tickets/looking for tickets.

But why is it in a park instead of the arena which is like 2 blocks away?
